I have two of the small Quantum brand from Harbor Freight and two that I don't recall for certain where I bought them but it might have been from Amazon. The latter two are slightly larger and have rechargable batteries. They are labled Wsiiroon and XML-T6. Light output is similar. The Wsiiroon were a bit more expensive but still reasonable. I prefer the rechargable ones because of that feature and they have a very long life before needing recharges. All four are still functioning properly afte several years. Just my experience.

Good Morning Jerry; I am a licensed Aircraft and Powerplant Mechanic. I have worked as a A&P Mechanic for about 20 years. The rest of that time, about 40 years I worked in Plant Maintence, all aspects mechanical, electrical, waste water, overhaul and building new equipment.. But when it comes to fixing a flash lite, other than putting a new bulb or Batteries they quite often defeat me..

I have several flashlights, including one UV, which are a bit larger – non-pocketable – and one or two 18650 li-ion battery powered. The best is the multi-functional TrustFire TR-3T6, which shows brightness up to 3800 lumens, and really lights up at a distance. It has a large head, with 3 LEDs in individual parabolic reflectors. I’ve had it for a long time, and don’t remember where I bought it, though most likely at a huge electronics store (Fry’s) in Phoenix. It is very well made, as all of that type seem to be, and never has failed to work. I certainly can recommend it!!!

I also have several (I’m a flashlight collector) of the smaller ones, and they work, as well, though the very small ones are quite problem prone.

That flashlight is so good that it got a swelled head.

I only use the light on my iPhone. No need for flashlights anymore.

But we're trying to shine some light on this subject.

I have a bunch of flashlights too. I carry one in my trouser pocket every day. The typical problem with the cheap ones is the very cheap switches all made in China. But, for $8 I just use till it quits and buy another one. The newest ones I just bought were $5 with no switch using CR123 batteries. Just turn the head of the light to make it go and very bright. Another $5 Amazon item. BTW, I have been using rechargeable batteries from Amazon and never yet had a leak. Regular Alkaline batteries almost always leak if you leave them in a device for a long time without use.
Good luck,
Dave

Check almost any fire, ems, or police magazine and you'll find American made lights.

Here are seven of the best - "Made in USA." At $50 - $254, they're out of my flashlight budget.

I have the 2D cell version of the Maglite. As you can see it's not as bright as others but very reliable. I simply use 2 D cell alkaline in it and I know I have good emgerency light when I need it. I look at a good number of what they call tatical lights and I don't like them much. Most are rechargeable and I don't like rechargeable for something like the flashlight. In my experience almost anything with rechargeable batteries I own I have to charge it before I use. That is not something I want with the flashlight. The most expensive one of $254 run on 123 batteries. I wouldn't want to use it just because of the batteries.

When I was using a Maglite years ago, I bought a kit to convert it from incandescent to LED. I don't recall how that worked out.

Mag Intruments still sell the incandescent version and doesn't sell the LED conversion kit. I know because I called them. So I bought a third party kit I think around $10 I don't remember. It works and produce about the same amount as the LED Maglite but it becomes less reliable so I don't feel like converting another one. The LED version from Maglite is very reliable.
