I was sixteen and driving to a friend's house when I heard the news on the auto radio. It was quite a shock to the nation as the USA was largely isolationist and there was a large group of German Americans who favored Nazi Germany. Sadly, Japanese Americans were placed in concentration camps after losing their homes and businesses. I think that was terrible crime committed against those people. Many of their men volunteered to join the American army and fought for our country while their families were interned . The German American Bunde quietly disappeared. All American males 18 and up to (I believe) 45 hd to register for the draft. A year and a half later I was in the Army training to be an Air Force navigator.

Thank you for your service. I was too young for the WW II draft but subject to the Korean war draft (I enlisted instead of getting drafted)

Yes, I'm old enough!! I was sitting on my Mom's lap listening to Roosevelt's broadcast/short speech. It is indelibly printed on my memory. I was two months shy of my 5th birthday. I remember the entire war. At times, during blackouts at night, I trembled awaiting bombs dropping. I had nightmares of Nazi soldiers taking me from my bed. My friends & I played "war" frequently. We chose up sides - the losers were either Japanese or Nazi soldiers. I hated it when I lost. My father was an air raid warden. He was not drafted due to having a rheumatic heart. My Mom was delighted, I was disappointed. Everyone saved tin cans and foil from cigarette packs and contributed the collections to scrap drives. Food items were rationed and one needed a ration book of stamps to buy gas, food and other items. There were always soldiers in uniform traveling by buses and trains. I lived 6 blocks from the Atlantic Ocean where cannons and anti-aircraft guns were permanently part of the landscape of the beaches. While I did not see them, I was told German U-boats were just miles from the shore. I remember how frightened I felt after the atom bomb was dropped on Japan. That lasted for years and years, including when I was a teacher during the Cuban Missile crisis.

Yes, I remember Dec. 7 and the entire time of WWII. We danced and celebrated when it was over on VE and VJ days.
At times, I wish my long term memory was not that good.

Mark, thank you for your memories. My cousin was a radio operator on a B17 that was shot down over Germany and he spent about two years in a German Stalag with other airmen. And my uncle was wounded when his platoon leader led them down the wrong road in Germany and he was hit in the head with shrapnel from mortar fire. His helmet saved his life, but he spent the next sixty plus years of his life with a metal plate in his head.

Just as the Holocaust deniers are trying to do.

I was at my grandparents 50 wedding anniversary at their house and some one turned on a radio and herd the announcement. This stopped the celebration.

In neither print edition of the Washington Post or the New York Times did I see a mention of the "Day of infamy".

By the way, President Roosevelt did not make a speech that afternoon of December 7. He made the "Day of infamy" speech in Congress the next day, December 8 while declaring war on Japan. 3 days later on December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on us.

Sometimes I wish I was not alive to know how perilous the world had become again. When WW II had ended and the United Nations was formed, the future looked so promising. No more wars, better education for millions of Americans, opportunities for all. Little did I think that i would be recalled to active duty because we were at war in Korea. Then came Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan; we seem doomed to constant conflict. Part of that is inadequate teaching of history and civics. And electing politicians who really live up to their oaths of supporting and protecting our Constitution would certainly give us better lives. When we remain ignorant, history will repeat itself. There! I have finished my rant.

While I was not old enough, my father shared that history with me. It was very somber and moving to visit the Arizona memorial. I encourage younger people to visit that if you go to Hawaii. It won't be a fun thing, but if we don't remember history, we are doomed to relive it.

Patriotism has become a (slur) in many people's minds.

If living in a nation where Freedom is a blessed and sacred thing,
to you, then to be a patriot is the "only" persona that you want to
strive for.

I've visited a few jails and realized that (I) was standing on the
outside, and had something that the prisoner, did not have.
Freedom! More precious than gold or silver. We do not worship a
politician, President, or the people of our government. The citizens
of America need and worship their freedom......and it is at a cost.

This came up on my FB page today, and the scene looked familiar from Pearl Harbor documentaries I have watched.

Did a double-take after seeing the figures wading in the water, and then read what it actually was!
