Yes, its disappointing. Being alone, I sometimes arrive at a site, check the surroundings, and decide not to unload the camera gear.
I will say though, that deep into the forest in Oregon I was about to get some waterfall shots when a pickup with four individuals pulled up. One of them walked directly towards me. they saw my camera gear and wanted advice on the best way to stop the water with their camera.
Stranger still -- the four of them turned out to be Catholic Priests from my hometown of South Bend, Ind.

I hope you got a picture of them.

With all the electronics already crammed into modern cameras, would it be possible to add some sort of tracking device that could be followed with a smart phone?

One does not have to be a thief to recognize that thieves exist.

Some Nikon already allow a gps unit to be plugged in that will transmit the location of where the photo was taken. Most new cell phones are compact in size and have gps, so it should be easy to have the transmitter inside a full size camera.

A super simple idea that I never thought of. Good thinking! And besides theft, there could be rare instances where a photographer got lost in a wilderness area and was found by the signal from their camera. Just like people aren’t going to intentionally toss their high dollar cell phone, they aren’t going to toss their several thousand dollar camera.

Would it be nice if a camera can be locked so that if ever stolen it becomes useless.
Then maybe extend it to the lens, have them paired to the body or bodies one own, so it only works with the body it was registered for (until the owner de-register them for sale or lending).

Have the unit send GPS signal, via a radio/sim card transmitter and if there is any available public wifi, upload the photos to the web. Maybe even capture silently every once in a while and upload photos.

Thank you for opening my eyes on that subject. I’m out very early in the morning in places where there are not a lot of other people around. I will surely be more aware of my surroundings from now on.

I had (probably still have) one of those GPS plug-in units, and it worked fine. I stopped using it because I usually knew where I was, and it was just another step to go through to get the coordinates into the EXIF data.

No I'm not letting fear rule me, but now that I know people know what my big lens is worth I need to be more aware. Like I said, in Yellowstone and places like that not so much. But it could start happening there as well. Some say I should have more of a natural fear of animals. I am careful around them and make may decisions based on what I think is or is not appropriate and safe.

25 years ago you did not have to worry about a car jacking or many of the things that are going on now. Times change and so we must as well.

Photolady 2014, you are completely right! No one can be trusted these days and all of us should be aware of our surroundings at all times and everywhere. I try not to go to certain locations to shoot if I'm alone. Not that I'm afraid, just cautious! Plus I carry a pistol everywhere and everyday but, I would hate to have to use my weapon although I will protect myself, my family and anyone that needs help!

It is sad. In "the old days" (not that long ago), I didn't hesitate to hand my camera over to a stranger to take a pic of us. But then heard about some of those strangers waiting for you to get to your pose, then running off with the camera. I don't do that anymore.

One of the Family Vacation movies had that scene, I think. I saw the clip below last night.
