During our 20+ years living in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains of NY, it never ceased to amaze us that so many people never seemed to remember how to negotiate snow and ice-covered roads, especially during the 1st snowfall which occurred as early as late September. More often than not 4-wheel drive vehicles were ones we saw most in the ditches!
We have had a huge influx of new arrivals this past couple of yrs and I would say 80% of them have no experience winter driving....we are always pulling new comers out of the ditches. And they tend to think since they have 4-wheel drive they can go the speed limit even when it's icy!
