. My 9 year old Grandson seems to be developing an interest in photography. He has taken some nice pictures with his Mom's i-Phone. Something like an Olympus Tough series crossed my mind because it is more or less indestructible. On the other hand, it is not very compact. Thoughts?
So, the simple answer is get him an iPhone.., but then again he can always borrow Mom's? On the other hand, if you want to nurture his interest, and are thinking about an Olympus Tough, you might want to consider the Olympus OM_D EM10 series(orig, mkII, mkIII and MkIV) with the 14-42mm pancake lens. Used, they can be in the same price range as the Tough, but will take any of the lenses Olympus currently makes, and offers many features of the next two camera models. It will grow with him as his knowledge increases. Many professionals carry the EM10 as a back-up, it's that good. Even tho I own a couple of the top Olympus, models, the EM10 is my "go-to-daily-carry."
Other compact Olympus models are the Pen series (EPL7 - EPL10). These have LCD screens only, and can be used similarly as an iPhone. Again all current Olympus M.Zuiko lenses can be used.

Point taken. He is probably a little young for his own i-Phone.
Several years ago I asked a phone salesman who was the youngest smartphone person he ever knew. He said, 4 years old.
Speak to his parents first of course. But these days, 9 yr old may not be too young for a cellphone. I use a Google Pixel 6A. It has a great camera, and not nearly as expensive as an Iphone. Or get an older generation Iphone.

If you think a phone camera would be more to his liking, it wouldn't necessarily need to be an iPhone. There are plenty of less expensive phones to choose from that still have decent cameras built in to them.

However an iPhone is what he is accustomed to so anything else would probably be a disapointment.

Agree. Your idea of a small tough camera is best.
There's really no reason not to jump in with large format, prolly 8X10. He has expressed interest in B&W so let's get him thinking Zone System from the get-go.

Then maybe an older iPhone model.

That would not be the same as his moms. Shish!

Wrong, most 9 year olds have their own cell phone.
It might be wise to let the parents decide whether their 9 year old should have a cellphone or a camera.
HI..
Just because it's doable doesn't automatically mean it's the right camera for a 9 year old. In addition, he will be asking for a more sophisticated camera that will need a mentor...might be you. Find out if any of his friends or cousins have cameras and what kind...a trip to Target or Wal-Mart will give you lots of choices for less expensive that nobody will be upset if it gets broken, lost or lost interest. What do his parents think about the whole thing? If he goes to summer camp find out if they have a photography program...the local library or YMCA are good addresses to be helpful as well. After you get a camera for him take him out on a photo hike with you and see how good eye is.
Great good luck!
I have a Canon PowerShot G12. It's a great camera in perfect condition, but I don't use it enough. I'm not sure, but I think the shutter count is below 200. I just checked eBay, and they're asking prices that go all over the place, from mid-$200s down to $30 for a "parts only" camera. I've never tried to sell it--I have to admit that I still really like it because it does almost everything I want to do, and it's light weight--but the grandson factor pulls at me. I'd sell it for $100 plus shipping ($20?).
PM me if you're interested.

I bought an A6000 with a 50 f1.8 for Ava when she was 7 (2 years ago). It's small enough for her and she's really pleased with the beautiful photos that she gets and we share lenses as I have the same camera. She uses it mostly in auto mode. She handles it like a pro. I bought her a tripod this past summer that she's become proficient with. Once in awhile we delve into aperture priority. An inexpensive highly regarded camera that Ava enjoys using. It's a win, win, win. How lucky am I to share my hobby with my best buddy?!

I recall that transaction and never tire of hearing how well its working out. Thanks for the "documentary". (My bests to Ava as well.)

Didn't have a fixed amount in mind, but the price of the one you suggested is doable. Thanks for the suggestion.
I have a similar Lumix that I take when I travel. This is lots of camera for a great price and I don't need to carry lots of gear. My 10 yo grandson has mastered this camera nicely. A good choice. Good luck.
I agree that 9-10 yo does not need an iPhone, which is much more expensive anyway.
My argument for not getting my 7 year old granddaughter her own smartphone went out the window when she said the 6 year old on her school bus has one and wanted her phone number.?
