Creating unintended duplicates indicates that there is something wrong in workflow or an editing app. That there is a step that’s creating the unnecessary duplicates. It’s best to figure out what that is and correct it.

Occasionally, I can actually find what I'm looking for.

What, you have more than 20 pictures?

I do, but I can't count higher than 20.

Thanks - Bob, the images are just stored in folders on a hard drive. My wife is trying to clean up her photo folders (2 families, 7 grandkids, travel etc….), she has been going through her folders and manually deleting duplicates and asked me if there was an app or software that would identify duplicates faster.
Consider using <quote reply> to better direct your responses and give context.
A catalog-based tool would be more useful than reviewing images in the folders. You could import all the images into the catalog and sort by the shooting date. Where the EXIF is accurate in the image files, you then get all the duplicates sorted into visual order. You can assess the images as well as the folders containing the images, deciding which is the master location, then make one of several decisions:
a, merge other copies of an image into the master location
b, delete all the duplicate images outside the master location
c, delete the non master locations (folders), pruning multiple images at once

Using binary notation you can count to 31 on one hand.

31(base 2)!! I used to teach that in my Alg 1 classes. I actually duplicated the "Sieve of Eratosthenes", with a base two algorithm, and generated primes. I turned the class into a computer. The kids learned a great deal and we had a blast of fun. I loved teaching!! Kids are fantastic - however there were always a few who were royal PITAes!
Fortunately, of a very small minority.

I had a friend who programmed so much in Octal (second nature), that one day he filled out a deposit slip in Octal.
Confused the bank teller a bit.....
DO NOT, I Repeat, DO NOT use any software by MAC PAW. Especially Gemini, their duplicate finder. It installs software that cannot be removed under any circumstances. Have spent hours with Apple techs at higher levels and it has them shitting bricks!
