Do you want your electric Mercedes to go fast? You'll have to pay $1,200 a year. Otherwise, that $125,000 car will be slower than a $46,000 Tesla. That's a little over $3.00 a day - like the price of a cup of coffee. Nothing! Let's hear it for subscriptions!

You're already paid for the cost of whatever enhancement they had because they have to have that in your car. Just like BMW heated seat, the heaters and all the hardware/software must be there already and they don't put them in for free.
Now they want a subcription to activate them. That's unlike things that we have to pay yearly or monthly. Even your subcription to Disney, Disney has to continue doing the work so that they can provide you with programming. But in the case of Mecedes and BMW they had to do nothing to collect the fee.
But then people who buy those cars have the money to burn so.... it's kind of irrelevant to me. It's like software companies used to release a lite version of their software which is exactly the same as the full version with some features disabled. It's not any lighter as it's the same software.

Speaking of lighter software, remember when software actually had weight? It used to come in those nice hard cases with a nice manual and one or more disks. Now, everything is a download, with no cost for all that physical material.

It's all relative to the cost-to-value (desire) ratio the individual consumer has.

It's irrelevant to me as I can't afford those cars. But I wouldn't want to buy those cars like that. But I know I am one man and what I buy doesn't count. But at least I know I do not encourage such a practice and it's not because of me.

No. "Oh, you want the windows to go back up? That will cost you $129.99 a month."

So, what if you have pedal to the metal, car is moving at “maximum allowable” speed, and, for some unfathomable reason, aka computer glitch, your car suddenly accelerates to Autobahn speed? How many victims will you kill before you can get the damn thing under control?
After all, SNAFU (and Karma) are real.

Are you aware that most modern cars now use "Throttle by Wire" where there is no throttle cable connected to the engine? There have been mishaps, but that's where we are anyway. I'll add that these systems can be hacked.

Yeah, but don’t forget, in this situation the speed control feature is already installed; just waiting to be turned on/off remotely when your subscription gets marked as paid/unpaid. Oh, right! The car mfr, the chip/computer module mfr, AND the subscription service operator ALL guarantee nothing will go wrong! “You Bet Your Life!” Groucho Marx.
