... And a *really great* photographer doesn't need a camera at all.

All he needs to take a fantastic photo is his mind, and he doesn't even need to share it... nobody will understand such a incredible art anyway.

May be true.
If he tried to explain or describe his photos, people may get the impression they were all the same -- blossoming -- because his eloquent descriptions would be flowery speech.

Well I guess we’ll need to demote virtually every photographer that ever shot B&W or color negative film out of the greatest category because they used a photoshop/darkroom to alter their photographs. 🤦‍♂️

👍 👍

If you need 1000 words to explain your image, you're doing it wrong.

If he were alive, I’m betting Ansel Adam’s would disagree - a substantial portion of his work on an image was in “post processing”

If Ansel Adams was the photographer worthy of that name, he'd do a better job Straight Out Of Camera like a Real Photographer.

When I had my 12MP Nikon d2 I felt safer knowing that it would survive the collision with some muggers jaw when swung from the end of the neck strap. the lens might not survive but the body sure would. It was also nice knowing that I was carrying a camera that cost over $5K new and I only paid $200 for it. My oldest daughter uses it now to make beautiful images.
With 12MP you can make beautiful 8x10 prints and acceptable 11x14 prints. with AI even larger.

Just yesterday I sold at the gallery a 24x36 triptych made from my old d300, 12mg camera. The fourth set in three years. It is not about megapixels but the quality of the original file. There is no size limit if the picture is sharp and the exposure is right.
…Cam

I used 6.5 MP camera for 16x20 and 20x24 award winning photos against much higher resolution cameras.

Resolving power of the lens is the most important IMHO after the photographer's skills.... Best pic I ever captured was on a 10 mp Sony bridge camera. Difference was the Zeiss lens which still has the best micro contrast of any lens I own.

Awards in 2022? Or, past awards using past cameras, trying to pass off this anecdote as relevant in December 2022?

I was in a few hotel lobbies over the Thanksgiving holiday travel. I've seen this before in the pre Covid days. Specifically, you can really see the visual difference of older cameras in large prints. They don't have any of the fine details today's modern cameras are delivering today in December 2022. They were the best of breed, but those bloodlines are exhausted in comparison to today's technology.

There are three classes of photographers: those that see the visual difference of more pixels and everyone else.
Awards in 2022? Or, past awards using past cameras... (show quote)

In 2021 actually.

I believe that the glass used is as important, if not more important than the number of pixels on the sensor. The best camera sensors will always be reduced to the physical characteristics of the lens attached to it used for that particular session including the need for cropping the image in post.
