Totally agree, photography is ultimately about illumination...
The very term Photography comes from (photo i.e. light and graphy i.e to write) it's writing with light.
Guess the major challenge is a basic understanding of the Laws of Physics, without this it may at times seem like magic. But it's actual only applied science... College Physics 101 is way more than adequate however the masters of antiquity did perfectly fine without College Physics... lol

Pure "Analytical Science" without the emotional elements of composition, color harmonies, to create three dimensional renderings in two dimensional space with shadow; highlights and such alone doesn't get it either... Likely it's a blend of all factors taken together and applied to the narrative desired.

Like any other craft the more you practice the more proficient you're likely to become, at least this has been my experience.

I have the same AF 70 / 210 from the 80 s , great sharp lens , auto focus work well . I use it with a D300

Excellent optics at a most reasonable price. I am sure they will go fast. If I did not have a 70-210 AF lens one of those gems will be in my camera back.
I agree with the gentleman that praised both of the posted images. They both have excellent illumination, to be expected from a professional photographer like Thomas, an asset for this forum along with Mr. Shapiro and I will not leave CHO-Canon out this time. We are very fortunate having them in the forum to give us their inside on photography and to guide us in the many aspects of this art.
