This male Kingfisher is one of the pair that frequent our local park pond. I've had success with them there before, recently with a female who was perched on power lines that cross one end of the pond. Not so much with BIF until yesterday when I got lucky.
If my wife hadn't forgotten her purse and wallet I wouldn't have been there at all...delivered it to her and decided to stop by the pond on my way out of town. A GBHE and a muskrat were there, too, but it was the Kingfisher that made my day!

He pulled out of his dive just before hitting the water, and circled off to try again another time.

Excellent action shot, Marshall!
Wonderful! They are so fast and unpredictable in flight!
Very difficult to get a sharp flight image EVER... nice work, they are the masters of speed and mostly accurate ...
Nice image. I photographed one a couple of days ago. It was backlit and not that sharp but I was happy to get it as I rarely get a chance at those timid little beggars.
Great shot! I just love watching the kingfishers!! I also love hearing them chatter!

Thanks, UTMike, glad you liked it!
I've been trying to follow Steve Perry's photo tips: Remembering to up the shutter speed after a posed shot, AUTO ISO, high speed continuous focus, and taking pre-movement shots in hopes of capturing the moment of takeoff. He would be long gone if I just used my own reflexes to take a shot, lol!

Very nice shot indeed!!
I have a winter King which arrives every year...to humiliate me.
Talk about cagey...he/she has so many places to dart to...always stays ahead or flanks me.
He/she is back...so I can enjoy a few more months of embarrassment.

Me too, Patty; I generally hear them before seeing them!

Wonderful BIF-Kingfishers are hard to capture on the wing. Thanx for sharing.
