This is just a curiosity question. From watching Shark Tank I've seen that there is usually a very big difference between a manufacturer's cost and a retailer's selling price. At least that has to be the case in order to get offers from the sharks. Does anyone know what the total markup is for DSLR and Mirrorless cameras?

If I was to go to eg. Nikon , Canon or, Sony's website, The price would be the same at any camera store like B&H, Adorama, or my local camera store. Even during a manufacture sale. I imagine if I look hard enough I could find someone with higher prices but wouldn't purchase from them. Obviously the authorized retailers get them at discounted price for resale which a company I worked for, (non-photography) the sales people would call a multiplier.

Years ago, I worked for one of the large West Coast Test and Measurement companies, ie oscilloscopes, etc. Their rule of thumb was that the retail price was 4X the manufacturing cost. Of course, volume purchasers could negotiate discounts from that.

I don't believe this is true. I think they set the price they can advertise an item for. But if the dealer wants to sell unadvertised for less, I think they can. I have bought items for less than MSRP from an authorized dealer and they gave me an accurate receipt for my warranty declaration.

True statement for Canon, my understanding, any way. I have purchased items (lenses, mainly) through links on “canonpricewatch” and paid “a street price,” which is lower than posted MSRP. Those familiar with the website know how the transactions take place. Canon honors the warranty.

Except perhaps for the automobile industry. In years past, one could negotiate the price based on dealer invoice. Not so today. Methinks it has something to do with "supply chain." Some dealerships sell today at MSRP. Other greedy dealerships mark up thousands over MSRP.

I spent some time in the dealer environment. We had 3 invoices for each vehicle. One we could show the customer. It was not what we actually paid for the vehicle. It was what the company invoices for a single vehicle.

Yes, the dealer invoice with both retail and dealer cost amounts is what the dealer sees, and it's the amount the finance source (Ford Credit, banks, etc.) records for the floor plan. However, within the franchise contracts, there are also costs reimbursed to the dealer when it comes to volume and special program discounts.

There's also special reimbursement when it comes to "bulk" sales - i.e. multi-vehicle contracts when vehicle are bought directly from the company, but delivered through the dealer. Most often these are municipal and state contracts. Vehicles sold to the Federal Government (including military sales) and the Red Cross are invoiced directly to them, and usually delivered to those agencies directly. The window sticker has the retail pricing information for consumer purposes.
