Thank you for taking the time to share that info! I'm most definitely leaning towards the D7500. I have no objection to buying used. Thanks again! Rita

I have both the D7000 and the D7500. Love both.

Hi friends....I am sure this topic has been covered To Death, and for this I apologize. I have a little Nikon D3300 which I LOVE. It's simple and easy and I never have to think as I use it. Alas, it's getting a bit worn as I have almost used it to death. I am in the market for an upgraded body, but as I have quite a few lenses that I use a lot, I still want the F-mount and whatever else the specs are with the D3300. I am retired, NOT professional and just take photos to please myself.....mostly macro, landscape and family stuff. What would you all recommend as a logical step up? I'd like to not outgrow it, yet have it a bit more sophisticated than my little D3300. Thanks for sharing your wisdom and experience! Rita

I would suggest a D500, D7200 or D7500. If it is within your budget go for the D500, it is the top of the line cropped sensor Nikon DSLR.

The D7200 would be a nice upgrade.

I followed a somewhat similar path to what you are trying to do. I had a 3200 and then went to the 5200. All the lenses I had were fine. The increase in things you do control with the 3200 over the 5200 was a challenge but also part of the fun of the upgrade. I think you would enjoy the jump as you have spent many years with the 3200.

I upgraded from a 5200 to a 7200 and am very glad I did. The 2 wheels alone are worth the upgrade for me

Well, here it is, and view the link below. This way you can decide what works best for you.

Main reason to prefer the D7200 (for me) was it has 2 SD Card slots. I used a 64Gb for raw and a 16GB for jpg.
Also consider a D3400, cheap, robust and the P series lenses are a reasonable price with good quality results. This is now my backup camera.
Made a mistake and got a Canon RP outfit, results nor much better than the D3400 and it is slow to use and only has one card slot the same as the D3400.

My 2 cents worth as I own 2 of the cameras mentioned in some answers. One of my cameras is a d5500 I have paired to a 18-140; it makes for a light weight carry around combo & takes good photos. The second is my d7500; it is a some heavier with my 18-300 lens on it but has the same larger sensor as the d500 plus better weather sealing and built in auto focus motor that allows me that advantage when using a lens that does not have auto focus. (The d5xxx series cameras do no not have in body focus motors while the d7xxx series cameras do.). The only camera I have with two card slots is a d7000 but I do not miss that on my other cameras. (A second card slot does give you a back up to the original, though). The d7200 is a fine camera, also. Any of these mentioned will work with the lens you use on your d3xxx series camera. DPReview can give you some very good info on cameras as well as comparisons between various models, Good luck in your search for a newer camera.

Thank you....I've been seriously considering that one. Is there much difference between the D7200 and the D7500?

One difference between the two is that the D7200 has two SD card slots rather than just one. I lot of people like that feature. Having said that, the D7500 is a very nice camera with some advances over the D7200. You can compare features on several sites, including dpreview.com. I have both cameras and frankly, I like the D7200.

I decided to upgrade from D3100 to a Nikon reconditioned Z6 with the F2Z adapter to use my D&F lenses. Not sorry, I have had it over 18 months and have shot over 6000 images so far. There is a bit of learning curve as there are more options with the Z line. But you will find it familiar.

I am retired as well but shoot dancers for a dance studio during showcases, demos & comps. My partner shoots with a D5500 as well. We have a good time. We shoot RAW 95% of the time.

Another difference - the D7200 has 2 card slots - the D7500 has only one.

Sew, you have some good options based on the replies you have received. Me, well I have two lenses from my Nikon N80 film camera days which I now use easily on my D200. D200 I broke last year. I purchased a D300-S from either B@H or Adorama. It is a solid baby, lenses work great on it. My story is that I have purchased good used camera bodies at a very affordable rate. If I cannot learn to use these, why spend a lot of money on the new or newer expensive ones ? My opinion is that you can purchase an inexpensive body your lenses will work on. And it will serve you well. Good fortune and let us know how this works out.
Bruce.

I totally agree Bruce. I regularly use my D3400 along with my D90, D80 and D50. Having a lot of fun with all of them. Each one creates a unique shooting experience.

My first was a D3300 which I still have, then I got the D5600. I use the D3300 with my microscope.

D7100, D7200, or D7500. I think the D7200 is the sweet spot but check these models out to get a sense of what would give you the biggest bang for the buck.

I went from the 5500 to the 7200 and loved it. There is a big difference but the transition was easy. It is a rugged camera. I bought it for several reasons that may or may not be useful to you. but a couple that will probably impress you are the viewfinder (pentaprism) which is superior to the 3300 (pentamirror). The second reason I liked the 7200 was because it has two card slots. Last year I bought the d500 which is another animal all together. I love it but do miss the built in flash. To me it is a far superior camera to the d7200

You would probably opt for the 7500 over the 7200 because it is newer technology. It has a tilt screen and I think you can still get it new whereas the d7200 is only available used and refurbed.

These cameras use all you current F lenses

No matter which camera you go to there will be a learning curve so I would suggest you buy a book for that camera. I like the David Busch books. They have been very helpful learning and setting up my cameras

Good luck with your decision and let us know your selection

Chuck

The difference in viewfinders mentioned in this post really makes a difference. The D3XXX and D5XXX series cameras have a pentamirror viewfinder. If you go with a D7XXX series or above camera you get a superior pentaprism viewfinder. The pentaprism gives a larger, slightly brighter view through the viewfinder.

These are both cropped sensor (DX) Nikons. Here is the difference in pentaprism (left) and pentamirror (right) viewfinders. The D500 (pentaprism) has the largest view through the viewfinder I've seen in a DX Nikon. The D7XXX
(pentaprism) series cameras also have a larger view than the D3XXX and D5XXX (pentamirror) series cameras.
