Yeah, it makes one miss the good old days of film and manually operated cameras.

You are getting the warning. Your shutter is failing (has failed). When it stops clicking, you will know it's gone. But it sounds like it isn't getting you good pictures now.
You can have it replaced, or you can get a new camera.
If you get a mirrorless, you can shoot with electronic shutter in many cases and preserve the life of the shutter.
I only use the mechanical shutter when I am forced to.
For under $600 you can get a D800 from Used Photo Pro (26K+) clicks. At 180K, your shutter has lasted beyond its useful life. And for a little more, you can get a nice D810 for just over $800 (38,600 clicks). The foregoing are at Used Photo Pro.
I wouldn't waste another dime on your existing D800. If you decide to stay with a DSLR, consider also a D780, or even a D850.
You can probably confirm (probably completely unnecessary at this time, with all the previous responses) that the sutter is not opening by taking the lens off, going into the settings > setup menu > lock mirror up for cleaning. When you press the shutter release button the mirror and shutter should open, allowing you access to the sensor. If the mirror opens but not the shutter, you have your answer. You will need a well charged battery to do this.

If you so desire, the D850, KING of Nikon Dslrs, is on sale right now for $ 2,500. Sounds like your D800 is toast, but you may want to check with Nikon.
First put in a clean memory card, then reset the camera to factory standards, put it on full Auto take a outside sunny shot then an indoor dark no flash shot remember how u customize ur camera in the future, if this fixes it, good, if not did it make u happy (play taps, thank it) go get a new better, (something u can afford) camera, everything expires even us learn ur new friend that was an enormous amount of shots but u can use it for parts if ur electronically endowed otherwise u can try mirrorless, less moving parts the camera is dead long live the CAMERA but make sure the other one is dead
I once had that sent it back to minolta was batteries done although they were well up to date but as you can guess long time ago
Tks. I finally figured it was stuck mirror. I could temporarily unstick but it would just stick again. So must be some alignment problem I am not capable to fix myself. On way to camera shop right now. Everyone's suggestions have been really helpful. Like this website.

And thank you for closing the loop by sharing what you discovered. So many times the OP is never heard from again.
Well camera guy couldn't fix And wouldn't send to shop since Nikon confirmed parts are not available anymore. not too much of surprise. I have been looking at sony a7r 4a and Sony 200 - 600. So I bit the dust and came home with new camera. I waited to see what the Sony a7r 5 would look like but it's not what I wanted. Shop was wanting to get rid of older model and sold it to me at last months sale price.
I have a new mirrorless now but am partial to my d800. I will try mirror up to clean trick just to see what happens. Ever hopeful I can resurrect the d800
Exactly. Sony a7r iva. With Sony 200-600 lens. With the extender I will buy when I can I will be doing fine.
Yep. This is what happened
Toast. And no parts available.
