Phone is one of his options.

Phone wins...easily.

I've taken many a vacation with no camera at all. Sometimes...it's better to just enjoy.

The only photographer you need to compare yourself against is the one with a better camera.

If you really want to go light, don't take either, just remember everything! He already said he was taking his phone, regardless, so considering the nature of the trip, how much more weight/size is the camera, especially with the W/A lens? Leave an extra pair of shoes at home if it's that tight - it's more than worth it!!!

OP: "do I just take the IPhone 14 or the R5 with one lens?"

I would us a Canon R 24-240. That is a reasonably price quality lens that should cover almost any needs.

Well the reason photography is a hobby for me is because I enjoy it. On my recent trip to Scotland I was very happy to have my OM-1 with me. The 12-40mm Pro lens, (24-80 equivalent), was all I used except the one day I thought I might see some wildlife and I had the 100-400. Throughout the trip I also used my iPhone 13 so I could have stuff to post to social media. I did actually have one cellphone shot from that day that was juried into a tough competition. The phone stuff was good but didn’t compare to my raw files when I got home and started working on them.
I guess my question is why have the R5 if you’re not gonna take it on such a trip?

If you leave your Canon at home, you're not a photographer.

I would take the R5 and the cell phone. I shoot Nikon so I cannot suggest a specific Canon lens for you. For my Nikon DSLR I would take my Nikon 24-85mm. For my Nikon Z mirrorless, I would take the Z mount 24-200mm. And I would take a fast prime in case I needed it for night/indoor situations--a 20mm, 35mm or a 50mm depending on what you have and like to shoot.

In Amsterdam, make sure you take the canal cruise, both a day cruise and a separate one at night. Make sure the boat has a place where you can shoot so the plastic bubble over its top is not in the way.

[quote=PHRubin]When I went on a cruise back just before Covid broke, I took my DSLR and a pocketable, the Lumix DMC-ZS100. The Lumix was used when I left the ship and didn't want the size and weight of the DSLR. It worked out quite well, but I would have been happier with the DC-ZS200.

Why do you think the ZS200 would have been better over the 100?

If I take the R5, what lens, of all that are available, do the take?

I tend to take the R5, because of the flexibility to post process a RAW file, but………obviously bulkier than the IPhone.

My wife and I took a cruise to the Mediterranean (Spain, France, Italy) in October. At her urging, I left my camera gear at home.

I regret two things. A) I didn't take my serious camera. B) I didn't replace my iPhone 7 Plus with a 14 Pro before the trip!

Next time, I'll take the camera AND a new iPhone! And now for some off-topic rants:

CAUTION 1: Covid 19 is still around. My wife came down with symptoms the day we were back in the USA, which meant she caught it during the trip. We are 5X vaccinated and wore N95 masks, and still, she got sick. After 5 days of Paxlovid treatment, she tested negative.

Fortunately, I didn't get it, but I had it last June after attending a four day college reunion. Paxlovid worked for me, too.

CAUTION 2: Secure your wallet! Several of us were pick-pocketed during the trip. Most were taking pictures in crowded places at the time (both hands on a smartphone). Even our tour guide in Aix en Provence was pickpocketed during the tour. He lost €30.

I've done most of these Christmas markets. I fund that nicest shots are at night, so take a reasonably fast zoom. Wide, at least 24 seems best with long end not as important. The wide scenes with lights are great, and getting close-ups is better by being physically close rather than using long reach telephoto. If you are shopping check to be sure you are getting local stuff rather than made in China ... some stands just sell mass produced Chinese products that look like they are by local artisans

Take both. If you have one, a lens in the 24-100 or 24-200 range should cover it well.

Just a little tip about your iPhone, you can set it to capture in raw format which helps with editing when back home.

I shoot with Nikon and took my iPhone 12 Pro along with my D7100 and 18-105 lens on a recent cruise from Tahiti to Fiji…perfect combination for me.

Hey I agree.

But he specifically asked...he was debating on whether or not to take the phone OR the camera.

Lightest possible outcome he stated he desires means...take the phone...of course.

I have taken cameras many times...and there have been times I have taken nothing at all.
Do I feel as if I missed something? Not at all...I'm more engaged in my vaca...not less.

It's a different experience...for you...and those all around you.

I dunno...been to Europe well over 15 times...only took gear the first two trips...after that...I didn't.
Just a personal preference.

Much more care free trip...that's for sure. Hey...first time...go ahead...after that...meh.
