I would definitely only buy a name brand HDD, Seagate and WD are very reliable. Keep your eyes on the B&H website, they do "daily deals" on specific items and hard drives always come up and are very reasonably priced. For my everyday external drives, WD is my brand of choice, but G-Drive is also very good (and may be owned by one of the other major brands). You can also watch Amazon, you can usually get a really good deal on hard drives there as well.
Please, as many have stated, don't waste money on what you saw on ebay. I'd bet money you'll be disappointed.

Yep, if you insist on buying a “spinner”, note how good the figures are for HGST, and that’s been consistent over many reporting periods. iF I were going to buy a spinning disk (and I’m all SSD in everything), it would be an HGST Ultrastar enterprise class drive. Cheap disk drives are no bargain.

Keeping your internal SSD for OS and Applications is what you should do. If speed of processing is important to you, stay away from HDD and cheap SSD systems. I store the last 5 years of my images on an OWC SSD system. Expensive but Fast! Best of luck.

WD Gold (enterprise) are great too, REALLY HIGH MTBF.
(I have two.)

Right, but you have to know what a name brand is. I commented on a brand I had never heard of, and people here said it was one of the largest manufacturers of drives.

Yes.
My primary exposure was to only WD and Seagate.
Now add HGST. Never had one, but now I know about them.

Hitachi purchased the old IBM brand and changed the name to HGST. I have had good experiences with both Seagate and Western Digital, but have never owned ab HGST so can't comment except thatI have heard good things. Best of luck.
