Evening Grosbeaks; a first sighting at our feeders here in KY.

Was sitting watching TV when a group of different-looking birds came through. I was able to get my camera and get a few shots through the glass of the patio doors before they flew off.

Had to go to the Merlin Bird ID app and some internet bird sites before we figured out what they were. The one in best focus is most likely a female, with the other two being males.

I went upstairs to my better birding window in hopes they would come back, but so far no joy.

Nice shot.

They came through here about a week ago (northern Michigan.) They never stay long.

Where do they winter?

I'm confused. I guess that KY is about as far south as they range, and are now working their way back north to winter breeding grounds.

Does that sound correct?

I am not sure, but from what I have read they wander around North America. They range as far south as central Mexico.

Here is a range map:

https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Evening_Grosbeak/maps-range

"Irregular migrant. When cone crops in northern coniferous forests are poor, Evening Grosbeaks 'irrupt' in fall and spend the winter far south of their normal range. These irruptions formerly happened every 2–3 years in the eastern United States but have become less frequent, particularly in the East, since the 1980s. Western subspecies migrate to lower elevations for the winter."

Not quite, lol!

Another birder posted a sighting and a pic to our KY FB group a bit before I did, from a couple of counties to the southwest...
