is there any hope of recovering pics from an accidently formatted memory card?
If the card has not be used since the format the images can be recovered
There are several programs that can be purchased. But the key, as mentioned above, is that you did not save any photos after you formatted. As a last resort you can usually send the card to the manufacturer and ask them to recover the photos.
Most memory cards "erases" files by replacing the first letter of the filename with an invalid character in the file allocation table; its space is marked as free, and new files will eventually overwrite the space which was used by the deleted files. Do not try and use your card until you attempt to recover images. I have used Sandisk's Rescue Pro in the past and it worked. Here is the link -

Kit Kit hit the nail on the head. Recuva is a great utility. No system actually deletes a files contents from the storage device when you "delete" it. It just marks the area where the file is stored as available for use.
So, the next time it tries to save something to that area - it will. But it may or may not try to save to that specific area - next time.
So, even if you have used it again. If you have not filled the card up with new images it might be worth trying to run recuva - just to see what's left on the card.
If you are using a MAC get mackeeper not only will it recover your card, its a great maintenance tool for your mac.
Image Rescue by Lexar does a great job of recovering images from a formatted CS card and I would presume an SD card. The interesting thing is you cn sometimes "recover" images from moths back because even though you may have formatted the card several times, there are always artifacts on the card. Some images may be corrupted but there is almost always something to recover. I don't believe you said how many gigs the card is but should you decide to get Image Rescue just download the program and let it run the rescue until it is finished. I think you'll be surprised and pleased. Just go to Lexar.com Image Rescue it is about $25 or so a good investment.

I haven't actually used this myself but I ran across it a while back and it has been recommended as very good.

Depends...
If you did a high-level format, YES.
If you did a low-level format, NO.
