When we first got a TV my father did not like Red Skelton, as he remembered him from earlier days. I kept hearing, in the schoolyard, that Red was very funny on TV. So I coaxed him into trying out Red one night. We then became a Red Skelton family! My father stayed with Skelton all his life but I gave up in my teens when I found him downright corny and just too sloppy sentimental! I still enjoy his early routines such as Willy Lumplump coming home to a home that has been turned on its side!
Carson was funny as a stand up on variety shows, but there were others who were funnier. When he took over from Jack Paar I did like his show, especially the first 15 minutes he did to NY before the network feed started at 11:30. I don't think he was noticeably funnier than any of the other comics who were on TV at the time. His best moments were in that 15 minute block to NY before the network show started.
Thanks for sharing. Two very funny and very talented men. Comedy was just more "relaxing" back then.

I enjoy seeing some of the old Johnny Carson episodes on Youtube - he was the first to present some great talent - like Robin Williams.
