Will my regular XQD card reader be able to read this card? Or am I going to have to get a new reader?

I don't think so, that's a CF Express card, unless it is a dual card type reader. What are your card reader type and details?

I'm voting with the "format the card in the camera in which you intend to use it" guys.

You can't format a card that the camera can't access.

A moment of clarity. All of your QXD cards work fine in your D500. None of them work in your Z6ii. The specs of the Z6ii indicate that they should. The problem is with the camera. Don't waste money buying different cards. You can try the latest firmware, and that might overwrite something that's corrupted in the camera. If that doesn't help, send the camera to Nikon.

The problem is the XQD card. It doesn’t meet the requirements for the Z6. I had the same problem with the Z7.

Fortunately my Z is a refurb so I had $$ left over for one card and a reader ... $240 for those.

I'm not stocking up on those cards until the price comes down.

UPDATE ON MY PROBLEM!!! None of the cards would read in my Z6ii so I could not reformat them in that camera. They worked fine in my D500 so I reformatted them in the D500 while I was updating the firmware in my Z6ii and now everything works. I did both things at the same time so I can't tell you which one fixed the problem but now everything works as it should. Thanks everyone for all the help. I wanted a bigger and faster card for video anyway, so everything worked out just fine. Thanks again for all the help!!!!

If manufacturer (Nikon) calls for a CFExpress, the card you're using is incorrect

Just curious. Did you format the XQD card in the Z 6II after you updated IT’s firmware?

The XQD card I got for the Z7 (used from KEH) was the only XQD card I had so I could not use it to upgrade the Z7 firmware.

I returned it to KEH in exchange for one that worked and then I was able to update the firmware on the Z7.

Once I did that the other XQD card would have probably worked but I no longer had it.

I'm surprised that a Z6 II did not come with updated firmware.

Any ideas for a fix would be greatly appreciated, i am going on vacation in a couple of weeks and would like to use this camera. I do have a D810 and D500 that I can take but would like to figure out the problem with the Z6ii.

You probably need a CFexpress card, which will also work in your D500 with the latest firmware.
