Did you ever ear of R:Base? It was a database program developed to keep track of the tiles on the space shuttle, or so they say. Then it went commercial. A guy I worked with iked it, and he talked me into getting it. It was a very good program. He used it to develop programs for schools and stores.

He was funny with his computer knowledge. He said that when someone in the building asks you to solve a problem, you should solve it but not explain how you did it. You want them to be dependent on you. I guess that makes sense.

No, I don't remember Rbase at all.

Do any of you use WordPerfect? I've been using it snice about 1980. When I had to decide what word processing program to get for my IBM desktop, I did what I do now: a lot of research. In every comparison, WP was better than Word. I'm not working in an environment with other people using Word, so I don't have to be compatible, although both programs are basically compatible with each other.

As I was exiting WP yesterday, they had an offer of an update for $39.99 (down from $99.99), so now I have a new version of the Home edition with a few changes. Ironically, I was disappointed the day before when I tried to buy it from Amazon for $70, but it didn't go through - fortunately.

In 1984 worked for Sperry in Clearwater, FL and used WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3 (in a DOS environment to begin with). Liked both; however, later on they, and other employers standardized on Microsoft products. The government offices we dealt with also standardized on Microsoft products… so that transitioned me.

It also influenced my home PC use as I could get a full up version of MS Office for $20.

Lacking the above changes, and the need to share files, I would still be using WordPerfect and Lotus 1-2-3

I have used LibreOffice since it forked from OpenOffice, even at work. I wrote an invoicing and stock management program on dBase IV, I even bought a copy. If I were to need a db today, I'd use sqlite - as long as I didn't need a GUI!

yes Word perfect is still around.

I have been using more than a dozen versions of Word perfect from DOS to X5 and the program will do everything anyone wants.

Jerry ---

There are a number of FREE, VERY GOOD, complete office programs, compatible with Microsoft Office programs (which I almost always have used). I have used WPS Office, which is very good, but LibreOffice is considered by many to be even better, and better than Microsoft. There is absolutely no good reason to pay for any such software!!!

Unfortunately, no.

When I need to produce a report from a database , I have to wrestle with the Pivot Table in Excel.

Jerry:
I have used LibreOffice products for a number of years since MS started "renting" out its products.
One download gets you a word processor, spreadsheet, charts, graphs, etc. all for a small donation.
It is really good and easy to learn, and the programs are fully compatible with MS products.
The LibreOffice "Writer" has only small visual differences from MS Word.
LibreOffice also provides free updates.

My first computer, a CP/M system, came with Wordstar, Calcstar, and Datastar. All worked fine with 64k of RAM.

I found a copy of VisiCalc in a box while doing some (attempted) cleanup!

Released for Apple II by VisiCorp on 17 October 1979.

I am surprised that WP is still in business. I used it in the 1980s for all my graduate works, dissertation...

Then multiplexing memory and paging was discovered and software kept growing and growing in size because the memory ceiling was eliminated.

I use MS products because my consulting requires me to be compatible. I doubt that WP is superior to Word in specific ways but you may find it easier to use. There is an add-on for Word called MathType that allows complex math expression in Word. Excel is quite powerful with some advanced math features (e.g., Solver) that I doubt are in Lotus 123. Also, pivot tables are incredibly convenient.
