Wondering after reading some of Steve Perry's ebook on BIF whether I need a mirrorless body.

Can I get by with a new/used D850 if I do not shoot much BIF?

How much better will my other animals show up with a new Z9? I understand eye detection is great but with bison, lions, etc finding and keeping the eye in focus is really not that difficult.

I guess what I am asking : is going to a mirrorless body going to make a $4000+ difference? Since my wife and I use Nikon bodies I am guessing that a Z9 for me would save me money as I can use my old lenses. I had thought about moving to Sony a1 and their 200-600. But then all my other lenses and bodies would just sit around.

Have you ever shot a bird if flight with your current gear? If so you don't "need" a Z9. Pretty silly question.

If you want a Z9, buy it. There are enough folks around who will back your decision.

Or, just flip a coin, Heads = D850, Tails = Z9.

You don’t need a mirrorless camera for taking BIF’s. What you need is practice, practice and more practice. Take the time to study bird behavior and their environment. Even though I own a Canon R 5, I still use my 5D III for shooting some great BIF’s. Take an Alka Selzer and you will get over GAS. JMTC

Don't rationalize. If you want a Z9 and have the money buy it.

Thanks
I will wait. I do wonder there are other benefits that I would get with a mirrorless over a DLSR.

What camera are you coming from? The D850 and the Z9 both have the " professional" user interface and operating system. I have two D850s and love them, but actually use my D500s more. They are just "quicker" and more fun to shoot.

I've looked at rhe Z9. It is a great camera. But it contains no magical advantage over the D850. It can do a few things more easily. I suggest that you pick the one that fits and works best for you.

Once you get the list,

The 850 is more than capable of BIF duties. I would rent a Z9 and see if it does what you want it to and ask yourself if the 850 does the same thing. Even if you have the funds, money still matters.

You’ve asked this type of question before, and the sensible answer is that renting your candidate bodies and trying them for yourself is the best way to discover the answer. Nikon has dangled this glittery new toy in front of us which is incredible in many ways, but one that may not work best for everyone. You don’t NEED a Z9 for BIF. You have gear that can produce great results, but you have to decide for yourself.

Someone here in this form wrote that he changed from Nikon dslr (sold everything) to the a1 and he wasn’t happy with it.
I don’t have an answer, maybe renting first …..

I reread the original post and if I am not mistaken the OP doesn't have neither the D850 nor the Z9. In this case why not consider the Z7ii? Wouldn't the Z7ii has the same capabilities as the D850 and about the same price but doesn't have the mirror.
