I thought it did work before but can't say for certain. I had these cards for my D500 before I purchased my Z6ii.

Pretty sure your problem is formatting and not card type. Firmware updates have simply allowed use of either card. If you formatted in D500 and then went directly to your Z, that’d the problem. You need to reformat in the Z6ii.

My Nikon Z6ii will not read any of myXQD cards. They will work in my D500 just fine. I am enclosing a photo of the back of my camera and a photo of one of the three cards I am trying to use. Any ideas for a fix would be greatly appreciated, i am going on vacation in a couple of weeks and would like to use this camera. I do have a D810 and D500 that I can take but would like to figure out the problem with the Z6ii.

I have both a Z6 and Z6ii and the identical XQD Sony cards you are trying to use. The cards work flawlessly in both bodies. FW on Z6ii is 1.4 I strongly suggest formatting the cards in the camera in which they are inserted if you haven't already tried that. I hope the CF card works for you if you can't get the XQD working.

I had the same problem with my d850. suddenly wouldn't read any cards, xcd or sd. I had several xcd cards so never invested in CF. tried factory reset, new cards, formatted cards, etc. no luck. had to send to Nikon. got it back in two weeks working well but don't know if they can meet your time deadline.

Nikon did a software update that allows both cards to be used on their z cameras. As others have mentioned, format the card to the specific camera you are using.

I checked with B&H Camera and they said it needed to be a CF Express Card so I ordered this one from them. They said it would be here Monday. Thanks for the suggestion and help solving my problem.

Ah! Like USB, memory cards are coming in too many varieties.

Was it reading them before?

I don't know anything about the Z6II but the Nikon site calls for a CF Express XQD

Those are two different cards. The Z6II uses either one.

First, update your Z6ii with the LATEST firmware right frim the Nikon site. Second, Format the card you intend to use it in. Always. I have 2 Z6 bodies and they can use XQD AND CFe via my personal testing as I have both types of cards. I normally use CFe cards due to their increased operating speeds. Best of luck.

Ive always used CF Express Type B. The "Type A" was apparently a short lived idea enroute to the Type B, so when I got my first Z (and read up) I went directly to the CF Express Type B.

The differences are huge. Kinda puzzling why the OP would buy a Z6II and then get plain vanilla XQD cards for it.

EDIT: I see that the OP did the right thing while I was composing/posting the above.

Well B&H wanted to sell you a card. I use an XQD card in my Z6.

Wow! Well, I guess I won’t be getting a Z6ii anytime soon with cards for it costing that much.

B&H is historically more trustworthy and up to date than Nikons phone droids and their manuals.

While my Z was enroute to me I did my research and it was glaringly obvious to order an Express type B card. No rocket science involved.

I’m pretty sure that Nikon’s manual is right…and IIRC it does say XQD will work…I would try formatting it in the Z6II myself. And to be fair…I would not use XQD myself either…CFExpress is way better, if 8 had XQD they would be spares or backup settings copies or s8m8lar.

Better stuff cost $$.

Fortunately my Z is a refurb so I had $$ left over for one card and a reader ... $240 for those.

But point taken, one must look at the complete cost, not just the single "shiny object". Card and reader added 25% to the camera ... not to mention adapters for F, EF, and Leica. All the peripherals added about 75% beyond the camera.

Ready to rocknroll, an $1100 camera actually cost $1900. Acoarst if I had bought a Z9 the proportion would look more reasonable, only a 20% bump up instead of 75% ... but thaz a $6500 kit instead of $1900 (but I might add one more adapter at $250).

For those who would warn me about depending on adapters, I bought one Z lens ... just to make you all happy :-)

I sure you weren't going to get one anyway if that's the logic you employ in your purchase decisions.

The camera won't recognize the card so I can't format it. I have updated the camera software before but I see that there is a newer update available so I will update it again to see if that cures the problem. Thanks everyone for your suggestion and trying to help me!

You can also try formatting the card in a computer, if you have an XQD card reader.
