Interesting feature on iPhone iOS 16

A friend just showed me a feature on the iPhone on ios16 that allows one to "cut out" a person or other objects with solid lines. The procedure is to open a photo and place your finger on the subject. The photo appears to be "scanned" as you will see some white lines move around the image being cut out. Then you are given the option of Copying or Sharing the result which will be the cutout section on a white background. It can then be pasted to messages and e-mails. The resulting file is a PNG that I am not familiar with. I tried pasting the cutout over different photo (jpg)backgrounds with no success. Perhaps those of you who have experimented with his new feature can add your findings. Here are a couple of tests showing the technique.

PNG is a "Portable Network Graphics" file. Try Converting the image to a Jpeg using L/R or P/S or any other software you might be using. Then try your copy and paste. Thanks for the tip.

One advantage of png is that it will handle transparency. Don’t know if the phone leaves the area outside the subject transparent. If it does, placing it on a layer above a desired background would show the subject over the background. You have to use an editor that handles layers.

My iPhone 8 is only iOS 15.7

I'll stick with my camera and software. I use my phone for two things. Phone calls and flying my drone. I don't even text.

As DirtFarmer stated. The image will be a PNG, Although when saved to your phone it shows a white background, that white background will not show when you open the image in Photoshop. The background then will be shown with transparent pixels.

Thanks to everyone for their comments. I'll have to do a little experimenting with this.

It appears to be so. However, there are caveats to that, which include the size of the OS, which would limit space on the iPhone for things I use. And since I can perform the subject selection outside of the phone, and since I don't do postprocessing on my phone (I like a large monitor to see what I'm doing), it doesn't appear to me that trying to get this capability on my phone is something I want to pursue.
