Perhaps, perhaps not. He may have been getting paid to shoot the event if that's what it was. Surely, he posted it somewhere. That's how it went viral. --Bob
I don't know about the photographer but I am willing to bet that the surfer had to go change his underwear after he seen that close call. I know that I would have had to.
Thanks... The image does not look balanced nor visually accurate... People would rather believe what they are told to see, than observe what they are seeing...
Lester Holt presented this story on last night's report. It is a genuine shot, (not manipulated). Don't know fish, but, being a top news program, I figure they'd have checked first before calling it a Great White.

via the lensLoc: Northern California, near Yosemite NP
This shot was taken with a very long, long lens as you can see the very narrow field of vision around the surfer. Long lenses distort distance, they compress it, and the surfer was fairly far away from the shark.

Great analysis to remind us of the telephoto lens tendency to telescope the view.
Dis-agreed! I've been a SCUBA diver since 1975. And a photographer for longer than that! I know something about sharks. It's a fake photo and it's NOT a Great White Shark!!
