Managed to get a reasonable image of Sandhill Cranes flying by the moon at near dark. Pushed limits of the lens-camera combo (Z9, z100-400s, 1.4x) because could not get very short shutter speeds. The new Z600 F4 S would help, but not willing to sell my car to get it.😀

Nice! Wish I could get the 1.4 for my 100-400.

I've got both of the TCs and the 1.4 pretty much lives on my 100-400. If I pixel peep I can see slight differences between TC on and TC off if I scale the view on screen to be the same subject size…but I can't really say that it's better or worse, just slightly different and in some cases the slight is TC off and in others it's TC on and most of what I do see is DoF differences because of the aperture reduction. When viewed at final output size on screen which is where 99.9% of my output goes…there aren't any significant differences to be seen. I guess the new 600/4 (or even the 400/whatever it is) would be nice to have…but zooms are so much more flexible…and I've looked at the images in LR to verify that I'm not always at 560 on the 100-400, mostly I'm between 200 and 400 or so…but I'm at >400 enough of the time so that the hassle of adding/removing the TC doesn't over come the loss of a stop of light. The 2x TC gets less use…but not none.

Yeah, I’ve used the 2x and it’s ok in bright midday light but with the sun going down earlier by the time I’m done working and get out to shoot a little that extra stop is a problem.

I have only had the Z 100-400mm for about 2 months (as well as the camera). It is a nice lens, and this past 2 weeks I used the 1.4x since I was shooting in a pretty open marshland and most birds were distant (100 yards or more). So far I am happy with how the combo works in good light, and am pushing it (for BIF) in evening light given the approximately f7.1 max aperture.
