As an aside -- I've been very happy with my Smaller, Lighter Mirrorless -- Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ200.
The permamently mounted zoom F2.8 25-600 mm keeps the dust out.

I use Micro 4/3 because the LENSES are much lighter than APS-C or Full Frame format lenses. A 35-100mm f/2.8 on m43 has the same range of fields of view as a 70mm to 200mm f/2.8 on full frame. But it weighs MUCH less and takes up about 1/4 the space in my bag.

Mirrorless CAN BE smaller and lighter if you choose Micro 4/3.

Sorry, mirrorless geeks. I'm 81 on fixed income retirement and have no trouble hefting my D500 with finely matched 200-500. I use a monopod for suport and stability
Oh, and until some ghost ship comes in with its boatload of cash. I can't afford to switch unless there is a philanthropist among you.

Unless (or maybe even if) he has some secondary income, he's going to need every bit of that 8.7% just to survive.
