Looks funny.
That must be what I missed, isn't that right kpmac?
I never use a comma under those conditions.
I usually take commas as a separator, or a pause.

With an item of direct address the comma IS a separator.

If I say “Beautifully done George”; am I saying that this is nicer than the other Georges that I’ve seen. Or, is “Beautifully done, George” a better way to say that I like George’s work product.

The latter.

Apparently many of the folks here weren’t paying attention in English class!

Yes it is, but my mind sees it as a pause.

(You DO know I'm not normal, right?)

There’s a grammar rule that separates items of direct address with commas, usually people and names, to give attention to the receiver of the message and, in many situations, to prevent misreading. This rule can be found in any English grammar book.

This from the old English teacher. --John

I haven't looked at an English grammar book in 50+ years.

Hahaha... Great job <attention><attention> Jack!

Did I miss something in English class?
So many people use a comma.

Those people are correct, so apparently you did miss something.

One of the challenges in writing is to avoid constructing sentences that require that the reader understand a fine point of grammar. At best, misunderstanding just trips up the reader (What does that mean?); at worst, misunderstanding leads to a perfectly logical, alternative meaning (and a mistake or a law suit).

I type in the comma in that way automatically, without thinking about it. So it is ingrained in my subconscious, implying it was taught very early on in my learning of grammar and sentence structure.

Maybe at one point it was ingrained in my subconscious also, but evidently it leaked out...
