I have the 5DIV and the R5.
The R5 is far superior and will serve you going forward with your current lenses until you can or want to upgrade to the Canon RF series lenses.
At least you will be going forward by moving to the R5 body.
Meanwhile, my 5DIV stays at home gathering dust.

PS: I haven't heard anything bad about any of the Canon adapters.

So why do you keep it if it is just gathering dust?

I have been using the Canon 5D Mark 3 soon after it became available and over time I have acquired several lenses: 24-70mm f2.8L, 16-35mm f2.8L; 70-200mm f2.8L; a 100mm macro lens and a Sigma 85mm f 1.4 prime lens. I am familiar and comfortable with the 5D Mark3 but wish to upgrade. Should I consider the Mark4? Are the improvements over the Mark3 significant enough to warrant the price ($2.7K at B&H) or should I consider a mirrorless (even more expansive.) How will my lenses perform on the mirrorless with an adaptor? I hate to think of replacing all these lenses. This will be a significant investment to replace the beloved Mark3. Your expert advice will be greatly appreciated.

Have owned the 5D II and III, currently own the IV. In my opinion, these upgrades are incremental, nothing that overwhelms the prev model. If you go mirrorless, you EF lens will do very well with an adapter. Good luck on your decision.

I have rhe Canon Mark 3 and in 2020 I bought the Sony A7R4. Which I love. In my case I needed new lenses and the Sony does what I need. At the time Canon was late to the mirror less party. If your Mark 3 does the job for you, then why update, other than to relieve gas pain. If you do want to make the change, then go mirrorless. Obviously since your invested in Canon lenses, staying with Canon makes the most sense.

I had the same situation. I purchased the R5 and never looked back. The adapter with the older lenses work flawlessly. I was fortunate enough to trade the 5DMIII in for a 5DMIV to use as a backup and never been happier.

Agreed. I just leave the adapter on the camera while in the field. The ring adapter is 199. and I expect I will be using it for many, many years if not decades. I consider some of my EF lenses to be "lifers."

Ditto.

Aloha,
I'm in the same decision process and doing a lot of research. However, I have a 5DMk2 that have been my main workhorse for many years - both at home and travels. I'm in my early 70's and want to do a final camera upgrade.

I'm deciding on the Canons SDS R, R7, R5, 5D Mark IV, or the (new) Sony a7R camera. If I decide to go Mirrorless, I know I would be needing a "Mount Adapter" for the Mirrorless Canon or Sony, having Canon EF lens.

Since I'm heading out to Japan in few months, I am thinking of purchasing my new camera equipment there - it would be a little cheaper.

Your opinion and comments, please....

I'm 74 and I won't concede that any new toy is my last until I get old. Still, if I were to make my "final camera upgrade" it would be the R5. It's the best of all the Canons you list and who doesn't want the best as their last? The Sony? I know nothing about it but it would have to be some camera to beat the R5.

What does the Mark 4 offer that the Mark 3 doesn't do that makes you think you need to upgrade? I can see a pro making big bucks wanting to make the upgrade for some really minor improvements but you already have a real workhorse of a body. For the most part it is the lens that plays the biggest role in sharp pictures. You already have that base covered.

Without getting into a convoluted statement... I use a 500mm f4L lens which has become more difficult to heft about... the equivalent R lens is about $13K... IF the R5 can handle this lens and adapter 1.4x I might consider the upgrade for the mp increase... I don't want to buy the higher f stop lenses which are a LOT cheaper ... that's about where I am presently ... thanks

Good grief! how much does that 13K lens weigh ?? All the (keeper) pictures I've taken never required any mega pixel counting.

I would recommend a used 5d mk4. I bought 2 in 2021 for around $1500 each on eBay. Both with low shutter counts, less than 10,000. Both are beautiful cameras. If you are happy with your current pixel count and want to go mirrorless, I understand that Canon is coming out with an r6 mk2 that has a few more pixels than the current model. You will get IBIS ,eye autofocus, you can use your current lenses with an adapter. The 5d4 does have more pixel resolution if that is important to you. I have a current r6 and am happy with it as is. I bought it used on UHH.

my personal hesitancy from going to mirrorless is the additional COST of the R prime lenses... I agree I have seen some spectacular results with the newer equipment ...BUT the cost is SPECTACULAR as well

So buy 1 adapter and use your EF lenses.

I have owned/extensively used 5Diii, 5Div, and R.
I now own/use R5 and R6. 5Div was a noticeable improvement over the workhorse 5Diii in my opinion, but DSLRs are past technology. I would not invest in a new 5Div (but in your situation I might well purchase a favorably priced used model).

But . . . regarding new (not used) equipment, I also would not move from 5Diii to the R. While that mirrorless model offers a 30mp sensor (as does the 5Div), it lacks the robust build quality and other features (e.g., dual cards) of both DSLRs in question. The R6, at 20mp, is roughly equivalent to the resolution of your 5Diii, offers mirrorless advantages including IBIS and focus peaking, and is priced similarly to a new 5Div. Some fret over the R6 having "only" 20mp, but that is a concern only if your shooting style and subject matter regularly requires very severe cropping. Otherwise, in my experience, 20mp is plenty for high quality prints of 24x36 and even larger sizes. And compared to the huge files generated by the R5, R6 files are a joy in post processing.

I will not part with a single pixel. Not one pixel of resolution.
