Excellently photographed and very informative, jak!

Thank you, Mike. We don’t usually see the Cactus Wren unless we go out looking for it in the right environment. We’re always happy when they turn up. So good to hear from you. Have a great week. jak

Great photo series of just one aspect of this birds life. If so inclined to do so, you could try Topaz Denoise. Does pretty good work. You loose a little bit of the very fine detail bit removes all the heavy noise.

The Cactus Wren lives its whole life within a few hundred yards of where it fledges. About the size of a mockingbird, Cactus Wrens nest in cactus, building a cylindrical grass nest. While birding in the UCI Ecological Preserve in Irvine, CA, we had a nice long view of this Cactus Wren as it entered and left its nest, brought additional nesting material to cover up the sharp needles surrounding the nest, and searched for food in the surrounding area. These photos were shot with a Nikon D500 using a Nikkor 200-500 telezoom at 1/1600 sec., f/8.0, ISO 4000. Probably should have tried to lower that ISO, but that's what it was. jak

Thank you tcthome. Glad you enjoyed these photos. I have Topaz Denoise and when I tried it I thought the test looked worse due to loss of detail that just leaving them as they are. Artistic choice I guess. Hope you have a creative, enjoyable week. jak

Steve, so true on the "Ouch!" part. There are times when the bird is just perched on the thorns, but the don't seem bothered by them. It would be interesting to know if their feet have evolved in such a way that they're impervious to the thorns...seems like they must have. Enjoy your week and take some great photos. jak

Beautiful set. Those nests built in cacti are safe from almost all predators except snakes. Even hungry Ravens shy away from them
