I have the opposite reaction. Shooting the southbound end of a northbound critter is generally suboptimal. You had great light and #’s 3 & 4 take great advantage of it while showing the elk’s personality.

Number 1 is not the southbound end of a northbound critter but a completely broadside photograph of a beautiful bull elk.

Number 2 does show the butt end but also and more importantly shows the side view of the elk to display that feature of his antlers. Both are great photographs in my opinion that any photographer of ungulates would be proud to display.

I'm sure you know that when photographing wild animals they don't pose for you and can't always get in a prime position. I went for what I could get and tried to take advantage of the good light. I'm guessing you can understand that. 😉
