Hope this isn't too far off the usual subjects.
I'm upgrading to a newer laptop which doesn't have an installed CD disc drive to load my Adobe CC3 or PS Elements from original program discs. What are my options? Buy a portable disc drive and connect with USB cable to my laptop? Or use my desktop to copy the program CDs to thumb (flash) drives that can plug into the laptop. Is that possible?
I know the preferred method is to download from online, but that's not available to me, so I'm looking for the easiest solution to move my photo editing programs from the old laptop to the new laptop.

I agree. Amazon has them for as little as $14.

Both my and my wife's new laptops have no CD drive in them.
I bought an LG external DVD/CD drive. Works well. It was $30 at Target.
(I have lots of stuff on CDs & DVDs. eg. Quicken 2007)
When I got my current laptop with no cd I thought I was finished with my beloved Photoshop CS5. I did still have it on my desktop. All my Adobe software is registered. CS5 was way out of date, but I called Adobe and asked if there was anything they could do. They gave me a link where I could download the program ... no charge. I still have it, and it works fine.
At a later date I was on my desktop using CS5 when it locked up with a message I was using illegal software. I called and the first tech I spoke to took about 5 minutes to recognize the issue. When they gave me a new ID for the laptop, the ID on the desktop wasn't changed. A few minutes later they gave me the proper ID and both computers still run CS5.
I made the calls very late (eastern US) and never had a long wait.
BTW - this was long after all CS programs were discontinued.

I bought one for my Audi, to play cd's on them found the hidden built in one. It was in the top of the glove box.
If you can network the laptop to the desktop, you can install that way. View the internal desktop CD player via wi-fi (or wired Ethernet) on the laptop and double click the install program.

The best way to go is with an external USB CD drive. They are handy to have, just in case. Since you have the installation CD for the programs you need to install, you should use them. I don't have any idea about your programs, but some will not work from a file copy. I know this to be the case for ON1 - it has to be done from the Internet for each computer.

The problem with CDs that come with a program, is that they are almost always outdated, and need an upgrade via download

Yes, and that's called progress.
Does it have an SD card slot? They're disappearing, too. More progress.
I'd try a USB flash drive, hoping there aren't any restrictions on the Adobe disk.
Download directly from Adobe……

Which, almost always, can be done after installation, (At least that's been my experience) unless it is no longer supported, then it's wallet time.
And as Jerry says, it's progress.
