I’m looking for a way to back up my photos when on a long, extended trip that doesn’t require a computer. I’m old and trying to lighten the load. Does anyone know of a portable SSD device that has a slot for an SD card and internal power? I searched B&H and couldn’t find anything. Any other suggestions would be most welcome.

If it doesn't require a computer, then you may not take the camera. It is, after all, a computer. Just take enough cards to suffice for a day, and then download to the computer you left in your room to avoid weight. And just remember, that whether having your files on cards or a laptop, you have only one copy. I hate the thought, but cloud does provide a backup in cases like this.

You are assuming that I go back to a room at night when I am out in the field for several days. I am using a new card every day and sometimes two a day. I am looking for a way to backup those cards without a computer. Last time out I used a notepad and multi connection device to back up the cards to flash drives. I want to cut down on what I carry and still have a backup for the cards. Thanks for your comment.

Does your camera use two cars slots. If it does, get a lot of cards, when you shoot wow the photo to both cards and changed daily or as needed. You have two cards of everything, store them separate so if you lose one set in travel you still have the other.

I know everyone's wants and needs are different, but I find a lightweight laptop, like a used 11" MacBook Air not only serves as a backup mechanism, but also gives me a slideshow/viewer of my images, lets me get online and share photos, and the shoulder bag I carry it in also lets me tote cables, filters, lens cleaners, and a host of accessories.

A refurbished (= warranty) Macbook Air can be had at Amazon for $219. I have two.

They weigh 2.3 pounds. I also carry a USB-to-SD card reader

On my trip to Greece earlier this year, I would come back to my ship, and in my stateroom, review the photos I took during the day.

Fred, you got my attention here. 4gb of ram is enough for you to do this? Can you edit.

Here’s your answer. This device simply backs up files from an SD card to another drive. No computer needed. In my case I used a 1tb ssd card. Quite simple.

Thanks, that's what I do anyway. I'm looking for a backup to that. I appreciate the comeback.

Right! And that's what I suggested on page 2. Thank you for reinforcing my suggestion.

I second the suggestion for this but it’s no longer called RAVPower. Here’s the link to the current device on Amazon.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The locations where I want use something are without power sources, no wifi and I may take several hundred shots of wildlife and landscapes per day for 3 or 4 days.

The NewQ, (formerly RAVPower), router I mentioned is also a power bank.

That's exactly what I was thinking. How about that RavPower device? That's been mentioned here a few times. It looks like it's no longer being made.

It has a new name.
