I think they're wonderful. I have a grandson and my daughter has a cell phone and she sends me lots of photos and videos of my grandson.

They work for me also.
Always in my back pocket.
It's just a camera in a different size container.

Is there a way to tell if the photo for an 8x10 print was taken with a high quality cell phone camera, simply by viewing it at the proper distance? Is there a way to do that?

Why do you ask this question?

Why do you ask why, when
the answer is self evident ?

Define "proper distance."

12.8โ€ to 19.2โ€ is the standard.

1 - 1.5 times the diagonalโ€ฆ any print size.

Is "proper distance" then the same as "pixel peeping"??? The pro lab that prints my images has told me that "viewing distance" for a print is double the diagonal of said print.

Your lab is cheating if they say that.

Yup.
Phone photos are mostly disposable photos.

Quite wrong. They can be downloaded and do whatever you want. In my example, my son called and wanted to know if I wanted to spend a couple of days skiing. I took this picture on the chair lift about 3 years ago. I had a print made and it's on one of the walls in my study. Perhaps you should not be so quick to generalize. In closing Ido not think there are many people using cell phones wasting their time talking and complaining about DSLR/Mirrorless pitures.

I hear you, and your 1st-grade teacher, but Hawgsters are, broadly speaking, deaf to that recommendation.

UHH Sacred Tradition is to misread the question in a manner that allows each "reader" to put forth their one favorite argument that demonstrates their self declared "expertise".

This has been the "Sacred Tradition" of all Echo mail, Newsgroups and Forums since forever. Trying to stop it would be a fruitless endeavor. The Hog does far better than most.

That is true, I thought the OP might be trying to get at a deeper question ... like my 1st grade teacher always said "Read the question." ๐Ÿ˜Š

If the question requires interpretation to comprehend,
it has not been asked correctly.
Otherwise, why make something out of what it is not?

Ysarex answered the question one minute after it was asked. The only other possible answers are Yes, and Maybe.

The original question was clear and concise. Loquacity past those 3 possible answers require interpretation past what was specifically asked, which is the "Sacred Tradition" of all groups and forums.

To enjoy reading groups like this often requires people to interpret questions past their initial construct and beyond one word answers. Fortunately, those not interested, including the OP are free to exit at will.

I agree, the original question had no ambiguity.

It may matter for those who only want to view prints from what they consider to be "real cameras". The purists need a way to tell if a print is from a fake camera. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‰

This is simply elitism and to me that is not a good characteristic in a person.

Hahaha.

Mine aren't.
I'm selective in what I shoot, just like with my DSLR and bridge cameras.
I don't shoot willy-nilly like many people.

As for figuring if it was a cell phone camera, why would it matter?
Phone camera, Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony,... I have no interest in what camera took the shot.
Then, would one have to ask about what editor was used to tweak the shot? I don't care about that either.
What I care about is how the end result looks, no matter with what it was acquired.

For most, one's perception IS their reality. Now whether it is 'true' or not, begs another conversation.
And then 'feelings' often guide the "one's" perception of reality.....

What is important is if you enjoy an image. If so, then it is Your perception, your reality.
Art is an art. For perception's sake. So as in Photography Art.
