I have enjoyed the different types of photography offered by fellow Hedge Hogs.
I have tried to branch out and try new things. I walked in the neighborhood with a 50mm 1.8 and a 20mm extension tube.

Trying to handhold was a challenge for me, as I felt photos were very soft.

I would appreciate any advise.
Jim

1/200, f11, ISO 400 or less..........optimum hand held close ups for ME

Nice shots Jim and as Mike said a faster shutter speed would really help.

They are soft, and blurry. Handheld, upping the iso and faster shutter speed would help, as would a tripod.

Regardless, your learning and these are not bad for first attempt. Besides that, you lit a spark in me. I have a set of extension tubes that have never been used. I got them just in case I ever wanted to try macro again. Now I am.

I will, but the first thing I have to do is heal from this colon resection. Photography is on temp hold. I have to stay close close close to a toilet. And that's all I'm going to say about that, as Forest says.

Hope your recovery is speedy and you are healed.

I just recently started shooting macro using extension tubes. A tripod is a MUST, and I also use a remote shutter. I sometimes snip the blossom to bring it indoors for shooting, since the slightest breeze will blur your image. Have fun.

I very much like your first efforts. May I make a suggestion about tripod use. Many subjects are quite fleeting and do not lend themselves to using a static tripod, mainly if they are of the insect variety. I have found a good method is to only extend the two outer legs and then rock backwards and forwards, to get focus, and also use burst to increase your chances of at least one good image.
