Several years ago the Texas DPS announced it would ticket left lane hogs(no offense) but never saw it enforced.

Thanks for the 7 mph tip.

Actually the rule of thumb we use is 10% of the speed limit! So in a 70mph speed limit anything under 77 we won't bother you, but in a 30speed limit going over 33 will get you a ticket. There are exceptions of course, like if you're driving erratically.

I still have a CB in my car when travelling. I use it on occasion to tell the truck in the left lane, side by side with the truck in the right lane, to please either speed up or slow down and get in the right lane. Sometimes they will.

I drove to PA this weekend - over 400 miles round trip, and Google followed me the entire way. Not only does Timeline show my route for all three days, it shows starting and stopping times and mileages, using my cell phone to track me. If you're concerned about your privacy, this is not the app for you, but I don't care if Google knows that I drove to PA. It took 3:25 to drive the 187 miles home, which is good to know for future reference.

I was surprised by the density and high speed of the traffic. I guess those speed limit signs are just for highway decoration. Eighty MPH isn't unusual in a 65 MPH zone. One tip about highway PA 100. The left lane apparently makes your car magnetic, so the car (usually a pickup truck) behind you will be practically touching your rear bumper. It doesn't matter how fast you drive in the 55 MPH left lane, that truck will be fixed to your rear bumper. What's ironic about this is that there is a red light about every two miles, so cars in the left lane race to the red light, wait, and take off again. During the entire 400+ mile trip, I didn't see one cop.

Another tip: plan on construction. My GPS said this trip would take 3:15. Going there took 4:30 - lots of traffic and lots of connstruction and lanes merging.

If you want to get more fun out of life, buy a ukulele, find a group, and add enjoyment to your life. Fun, fun, fun.

We are in the middle of a road trip going from Western Washington to Lake Tahoe traveling down I-5. In Oregon with a 65mph and trucks 55mph speed limit if I only went 75mph 18 wheelers would be passing me. Had to do at least 80 not to piss everyone off. I'd stay in the middle of a pack of cars doing 80-85 and had some cars weaving thru us and soon out of site.

Never saw a cop until we came on a crash site with a dozen mostly unmarked patrol cars with inside flashing blue and red lights, so they were among us but never pulled anyone over for speeding. We did make this leg of the trip in record time.

Just spent the night in Canyonville Oregon. Now we'll see how the rest of the trip goes, especially in California where ignoring the speed on I-5 limit is normal. I'll be happy when we get off the interstate at Mt Shasta and take Hwy 89 from there going thru Lassen National Forrest. Next stop, Reno Nevada. Then to Lake Tahoe for a few days.

I'm seeing this a lot on the interstates. Truck tries to past a truck and doesn't have enough stuff to pass and just creates a lot of traffic behind him. I was amazed this past weekend of all of the truck traffic between Little Rock and Memphis. In 5 minutes I counted 125 semi's that were traveling in the opposite lanes.

Jerry, where did you travel on PA100. That's one of our local major routes along with PA73.

The left lane in PA (again) is for passing. For a number of years they (big bro) changed the law and you could pass on left or right, but they changed it back so you can only legally pass on the left. Lots of folks get pissed if you ride in the left lane and are not passing, and it doesn't matter much if you are going the speed limit or not.

As for Police, many use WAZE, an awesome phone app that provides LIVE updates for traffic, wrecks, COP locations and so on. It's interactive so if you see a cop, or a wreck, or traffic, you click on a button and it is recorded somewhere and EVERYONE using WAZE in that area is notified. If it changes, you click and notify of the change, so it's very accurate.

From PGH to Nashville it was 100% accurate. People get points for reporting this stuff and it really works. If there is traffic, it gives you alternate routes. We hit one large traffic jam on the way. Called my son who turned us on to WAZE and he said do what waze tells you, it is always right (it was.)

For cops, particularly on highways, it's WAY better than the old CB radio, which were seldom accurate. Waze if better than any car GPS unless you Bluetooth it to your car GPS screen. Waze is completely free, and is so good, GOOGLE (the map people) bought it and recommend it for your GPS guidance. I imagine all by itself, it's done a number on the speed cop tax collector, and unlike the radar detectors, there's nothing the cops can do about it. If you get a speeding ticket with WAZE, you were not paying attention.

The other issue I think is most speed limits now are around 70. Most people seem to like that and few go much over that. 55 was totally stupid, and 95% of everyone went over that by a lot and the mobile tax collector was getting rich. 70 mph is what people think is a safe speed, so that's what they do. You will always have a maniac flying at supersonic speeds, but that is not common.
Between reasonable speed limits and WAZE, speed cops are not as productive, and probably why you didn't see any.

The only downside I found with WAZE is that it’s a cellphone battery hog, so I always find myself using it with a charging cord for longer distances

That's for sure. My phone also heats up like crazy when using it. I guess cause it's using Data rather than WiFi...

A few years ago I was making regular late night trips on I 87 between Albany and NYC. There were two trucks playing leap frog with each other for a few miles when one of them decided to spend some extra time in the left lane…who knows why. I was content to stay in the right lane, they were going around the limit. In my mirror I saw a car coming up in the left lane who wasn’t satisfied with the truck’s speed in front of him and started flashing his lights. The truck did get out of his way…about 5 miles later.

Traffic in most urban areas is a zoo anymore.
Then there are the "animals" in the zoo.....

And yes, there is always someone wanting to go faster than you,
even if you are doing 10 over.
On the plus side, observing the animal in his natural habitat can be a fascinating pass time.

In the Costco parking lot yesterday, I watched two girls try to put a 65" TV into a Honda Fit.

I received a warning citation for 57 in a 55… and the Florida Highway Patrol kept me on the side of the road a VERY long time doing it. He had been holding a long line of cars behind him, on I-75, and I (at 57 MPH) slowly passed him.

Yep, even if not speeding, it’s always risky to pass a Highway Patrol.

I use TracFone, which is almost free - avg $12/mo for the past six years. Since I have to pre-pay for minutes and data, WAZE would be too expensive for a long trip.

I used to get charged extra for going over my data limit with Verizon until I switched to a senior plan with unlimited data. Now I cruise down & back to Florida with no data overage charges.
I only used my radar detector on longer trips except in Virginia. They are illegal there and will be confiscated, fried, and returned to you totally unusable. That’s where WAZE takes over.
BTW, if you go over 80 mph in Virginia, you’ll be fined thousands of dollars. So now I set my “adaptive” cruise control for 78 mph in VA.
