I have a MacBook Pro and I love the portability also, but I also have it hooked up to a larger monitor that we had hanging around and I love it. I have the bigger screen to see detail better, but I get the advantage of being able to spread my work out on both screens.

Ok I just hit the purchase button. I bought a refurbished 27 in imac. It was the same price as the newer smaller one coming out on Friday. Has more memory that can be added to it than the smaller imac. Has the DVD drive included.
So I spent about the same money and got a bigger computer.
The MBP sounded really good but I am not sure I would have been happy trying to do the pp on it. I know I will love this.

Good Move! Better to upgrade the memory after the fact anyway. Apple was always a little more pricey in that area
I have the 31 inch monitor for my Mac PRO. Apple doesn't make it anymore. Its going to be a sad parting when it dies.
Hopefully she lives another 5 years.
Congrats!

They won't upgrade the memory on the refurbished computers before shipping. I upgraded this one without a problem so I am not too worried about doing the new one when the time comes. I will probably wait awhile and let the checking account recover.
I have found that that macs are much longer lived than any other computer so I will be hoping yours last another 6 or 7 years.

Also, just FYI, we looked at Craigs list and got my son a used one for college with Apple Care, and it was the best thing we have ever done. Wish we had thought of doing that when we bought mine. P.S make sure it has Apple care, we have already used it.

Apple care was the second thing in the cart. I only used it once with the imac I have now and it was something really minor, but I wouldn't spend that much on a computer and not buy it.
I didn't know you could put Apple care on used computers. Neat!
Thank you. I know that I will.
I want to thank everyone for their input. All of your comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
You can also use a MackBook Pro and hook it up to a large monitor and that gives you the best of both worlds. BV

I seriously considered it, but the mac monitors are very expensive and the other brands don't measure up so I just ordered the imac. Maybe next time around. :-D

I can't wait until it is here. They have actually tagged it to ship already. I should have it next week some time.
Congrats! I think you made a good choice - I looked at the MBP and was irritated that it has the processor and RAM soldered to the motherboard so neither is upgradable, the SSD drive can be removed but is not industry standard shape/size so you can't upgrade it either... for $2,500 they should be better than that. Not to mention is only has the same processor that a $700 Windoze laptop has, come on Apple, step up the game.

I was trying to keep the price in the 1200 range, but already see that that is not going to happen  With having to buy a DVD drive if I want one, warrenty and some kind of office program.
They both come with DVD drives, right?
No I just figured out last night that the new imac does not. is what got me looking at other options in the first place.
Wow! I heard that Apple would be moving in that direction, but it doesn't seem like a good idea. They will save manufacturing costs, but will the price of the unit be reduced? Buying an external drive would be a necessity for installing software, etc. This is a case where less is actually less - but costs more.

All the computer companies are moving this way. The idea is you buy your software online and download it. No need for CD's or DVD's. I still have some CD's with photos on so I bought the external one for my MacBook Pro. It cost $99 in Australia, but worth it for my peace of mind.

I got a refurb 27" iMac, and it's larger than I need, but I'll live with it. We all have sacrifices to make.
Seriously, though, if you're considering the 27" try one out first.

I live to have all my programs on disks. If they don't arrive that way, then I copy them to disk.
