One of my favorite is Thom Hogan. He is thorough and knowledgeable.

I have a D850 and use Thom Hogan's guide to the D850 AND I use Steve Perry's AF Guide too. I would get both and both will help you master the features you need to get excellent photos from this wonderful camera.

If it has been awhile read up on how to use Auto ISO and how to set it up properly.

I have Mike Hagen;s flash books are recommend them. I have not seen his camera guide. But Mike is very good at what he does, both in print and video classes.

Another vote for Steve Perry books and videos. I believe he does a video that shows step by step how to set your camera

Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. Hopefully I’ll be back shooting photos before another 10 years pass!

Tip #1 Rear button focus. You'll never go back.

After being away from serious photography for over 10 years, this Christmas I found a D850 under the tree. Since my last camera was a D700 (again not used in a long time,) I find the need for a guide(s) to get me going again...

Thanks in advance for any help here.

I posted this response from mid-September to a JerryC41 thread after he bought a Nikon Z fc:

"Whenever I get a new camera which happens several times a year, I always Google: "Best Nikon XXXX settings for YYYYY photography." You'll get a number of websites that recommend and explain the various choices of settings in the menus. Most are set once while others can be varied depending on the type of photography you do.

Substitute "D850" for XXXX." The "Ys" above are for "Portrait, Landscape, Sports or any other genre" of photography.

These website writers and reviewers will suggest and provide their insight on which setting(s) to use. I always find the info very informative."

I bought both Thom Hogan's and Steve Perry's AF books. Thom's book on my D810s was close to 1000 pages and very detailed as to all the features of that camera. I imagine the guide to the D850 would be even longer!

Be well! Ed

I have David Busch's books for my 850, 750, and 7100. They're great if reading is your mode. If you prefer visual/video instruction, Creative Live's John Greengo does a fabulous job at in-depth coverage of this amazing camera. John is a gifted instructor who provides really clear graphics to illustrate learning points.

The Nikon manuals are uninspiring, and a quick perusal of Darrell Young’s “Mastering the D850” didn’t give me what I want: a kind of triage set up with a good quick start overview to get me going, then later chapters set up to explain the more nuanced capabilities. I’m also wondering if either Mike Hagen’s or Steve Perry’s guides to autofocus settings would also be of help.
Thanks in advance for any help here.

The D850 is a complex camera. I used the Derrell Young book that you reference. Took notes so I can reference it for stuff that I'm trying to do. I also used Steve Perry book for setting up and using back button focus--a great thing to know how to use and relatively easy to set up. I like his videos. Keep shooting and remember photos files
are cheap.

I got this camera 6 months ago after owing the d500 and D750. I went to Photography Life’s website and read their introduction to the D850 which includes beginning settings. I have used their articles for years.
I also bought all the above books people have recommended. I like Thom Hogans best but it is long.
Some writers do not use BBF. Some do. I try to stay with those who use BBF because the autofocus settings can be somewhat different depending on what you use and it can get confusing.
I only use RAW, never JPEG.

It's hard to say if I learn in the same manner as you, but I found Steve Perry's Guide "Secrets to the Nikon Autofocus System" DSLR edition, to be extremely helpful when I had my D850.
I made the change to mirrorless and found Mike Hagen's instruction on the Nikon mirrorless very helpful. I can't comment on his instructions for the D850 though, as I didn't check it out.

Gook luck and hope you enjoy photographing again.
The D850 was fun to use. Bev

If you're into it, the 850 is one of the few - if not the only - DSLR's that can do focus bracketing that can be used for focus stacking. Be very careful tho, it can be extremely addictive.
