Just completed a task, sitting watching over our ducks when this Hoot Owl descended on a tree about 22 feet from where we were sitting. This was just before 4PM PDT. I did not have a camera only my cell so my wife-who is much speedier afoot than me nowadays-went for my Z9 with 500pF attached.

While we watched, a rat appeared to the bird's left-our right in some salal and blackberry. This birds finally flew off after 6 PM PDT! It stayed over two hours on three different perches. Needless to say, I took over 1300 images!

My wife and I pointed out the rat to the owl and made sure the bird knew we wanted that damn rat gone!

The owl perched for an hour on our dog run-watching and waiting for the rat to show itself.

After diving on the rat, the owl seemed stuck so I went around to backside off our run area to free the bird. Not necessary. I showed him a clear path through the blackberry and it took it!

I apologize in advance of any who may be upset over the dead rat image.

Download and enjoy!

Thank you for sharing these great Barred Owl photos. The lacing under the head, stripes on its chest, and lack of spots on the head eliminate Spotted Owl. The habitat strongly favors Barred Owl over Spotted Owl.

Last spring here in Texas when I was able to sleep with the windows open a barn owl lined on the fence by my bedroom window and hooted for over an hour
Beautiful bird that serenaded me to sleep

I agree! The horizontal stripes convinced me. Plus we hear Hoot owls most nights.

The spotted owl is very similar looking but it really looks more like spots. The typical hoots are great-horned owls I believe. The barred owl is thought to sound like: "who cooks for you". If you have Merlin, you can ID the calls.
If you don't mind, for comparison below is a photo of a spotted owl I was very lucky to get:
And the call of a spotted owl is completely different:

What we hear is “ who, who, who cooks for yooouuuu. ….. most nights. This owl has shown up for the last three evenings. I will post more shots tomorrow. I believe we have a resident Northern Barred Owl.

Thank you! Definitely sounds like a barred owl. And I am very jealous that you have it residing near you! A great subject for photos. Maybe s/he will find a mate and have chicks nearby.
