NO program needed ! A trick question ? Insert card into card reader, Open photoshop and select raw image. DONE .

So you never put your original raw file onto your computer? What do you do if you want to re-edit the image? The original was still on the card, which you may have already reformatted. How about backup?

I see this question so many times: My answer is I don't :
I use the K.I.S.S method:
1: Make a folder /subject/date/location on the desktop (My System is an iMac, worked the same on Windows)
2: Insert CF/ SD card into reader, open files and drag into desktop Folder.
3: Remove card and reformat in camera,( After checking to be sure the files transferred)
Images are now on the computer!
4:View images in Bridge or Adobe Camera RAW, Edit and save in same folder.
5:When finished editing and posting, drag folder into three external HD's, Nothing is saved on my C: drive.
When I need to find an image I turn on the external drives locate my image/s, do whatever and turn drives off.
This has been working for me for 20+ years, I have never lost photos due to a glitch or hitting a wrong key
When I change computers All my files are still where I left them.
Now I am not saying this is the only way. I know its not good for Professional Photographers or businesses.
But It is simple!!!

I always import into date shot folder (yyyy_mm_dd) using Nikon Transfer. I have been doing this for years. I have not found another program that will import with the underscore format. However it will only import raw from Nikon. When I use other cameras I have to import manually in my folder. Since I mostly shoot JPEG, this is not an issue, If anyone knows of a program that will import yyyy_mm_dd please let me know.

If you're using Windows, Downloader Pro will allow you to set up a template that will import into a folder with a custom name. YYYY_MM_DD is possible.

If you're using Mac, Downloader Pro is not supported. I had to write my own intake program to get the format I was used to with DP.

I import directly from my card to my PSE Organizer (jpgs). I use the album/category option on the left to sort appropriately. I can drag the images around and about the albums and also export them to elsewhere on my computer or Dropbox for email links; all the while maintaining the originals plus respective edits in the Organizer. I'm not a Pro, and it works well for this forever amateur.

I use FastStone Image Viewer to peruse the RAW files. I only shoot RAW. I select those I want to save and process in Adobe Photoshop. After processing I save them on my dedicated SSD photo drive to an existing folder/subfolder, using Windows Explorer. I store the RAW images in a separate subfolder. I do redundant backups all my internal drives (weekly) using Acronis.

My method is simple!

ONE stop shopping. Store to BOTH the TB4 attached SSD system AND a local Synology NAS system at the same time. From a XQD/CF Express card reader. Using a Mac STUDIO Ultra. Best of luck.

Essentially exactly the same steps as yours, Frank. Minor differences is that I don't reformat the card until I've completed culling and then I reformat in camera. Also, I cull using FastRawViewer - years back (around 6 or 7) when I was using CS6 I did cull using Bridge or Camera Raw (I really liked Camera Raw).
So, same for me.

👍, except a simple offsite (cloud) storage is needed. But in your case that hasn’t yet come up…

To answer your question, if they are Nikon files, I use Nikon's software to transfer and rename them. If other files, I simply use the copy and paste in File Explorer. I format the card only after I verify that the files have been transferred successfully.

Better safe than sorry!

I've done pretty much the same thing since I've been doing digital photography. Not precisely the same but very similar. I do have one external drive that somehow got corrupted and it would cost a bundle to retrieve the files it contains. I've got the same answer from people who are very knowledgeable about such things and thus far haven't spent the money. I hope some chrome://newtab/day soon someone will come out with the software to let me retrieve everything on this drive. And one other thing I've done that in hindsight I'd do different... I have some early folders that I simply called "miscellaneous." Bad idea. Don't bother explaining how to rename folders, I know. And I do sometimes.
