I travel a lot and wish I could find a guide who knows his/her city well and could show me the highlights. If that person was also a photographer even better.

Any thoughts of where the best place is to advertise for such a person?

Is there a website already established for such inquiries ?

The city Visitors Bureau works well. Most have websites with must-see suggestions.

What would you think the charge for someone being your tour guide would be? You might want to search out websites that could help.

It won't be cheap. Maybe a stack of brochures and a GPS will work. While my wife and I were living in Dresden we used the GPS whenever we went anywhere. It worked pretty well. We just told it where we wanted to go and it led us there.

A tour guide devotes all of their time to you. That means money…perhaps a lot of money.

My wife and I will sit down with a travel guide of some sort. We will take turns picking out sites to see. Then we set up an itinerary and stay on track.
Many cities have visitor bureaus. However they might be extremely limited at times. Both by not have enough brochures available and by not having a great deal of brochures of interesting places.

Try company named”tours by locals”. Go to the website , Type in city name and info about multiple guides and itineraries pop up along with prices. Can be expensive. I have used the service in China, Austria,Belgium, Ireland ,Scotland. Always happy with the service. Some drive, some walking. Lots of options. Good luck

We use Viator. It is owned by Trip Advisor. It has guided tour offerings for nearly every city in the world. It has ways to set up transportation or transfers as well. We have done food tours in Poland, Venice and Peru. We’ve done WW2 tours in Germany.

Most recent we set up an airport transfer from Casablanca to Rabat in Morocco using Viator.

I just looked and there are photo tour offerings as well in many places.

In cities we often look in visitor centers but they are quite limited in info on tours. Viator is our first place to look.

There is an app called GPS My City. It has points of interest for major cities with GPS coordinates. I used it in Buffalo to set up a walking tour. It provides photos of the venues and found what I thought were the best architectural buildings in that city. I just set up the walking itinerary the nite before. Easy.

There is a site that is dedicated to photo locations but is a membership deal. I’ve not used it.

The Photographic Society of America has a travel advisory component as well. I tried using it once and then info was rather thin. But you might try it if you are a member.

A quick look on Apple App Store reveals quite a few apps for photo locations.

Finally, in major cities consider using the hop on- hop off bus pass for the first day. It gives one a good orientation of the major parts of the city.

What city?
Different cities have different people and resources.

Try the local Historical Societies (City or State). They often will have a local guide book . . Or, be able to recommend local History "nerds" who are long-time residents.

In the past I have often found the websites for Hop-on Hop-off buses useful to find out what some of the highlights are. The seats are close together front to back so if you are much over 6 foot they can be uncomfortable. Yelp webpages are also helpful with links to tours.

I Simply google two questions:
1. "Best places to photograph in city e.g. Bilboa, Spain". On average I find web pages that locate between 20-50 locations.
2. "Unusual place to photograph in Bilboa, Spain" Brilliant for finding out of the way excellent photographic opportunities.

Then layout the locations you are interested in on Google maps; for example the Guggenhein Museum in Bilboa. Select the little figure on the bottom right of the map (below the +/-) and move this icon to the small blue dots around the red icon that shows the museum's location. In this specific Bilboa location you will find ~ 20 blue circles. Once you have positioned the little figure on any of the blue dots it will convert to a photograph of the location from that specific angle. Never needed a guide or a third party tour since using the Google search ("best and unusual locations") and the google map icon methodologies as stated above. If you have not used "the little figure" methodology, try it out on Google Maps for this specific location in Bilboa. Works a treat anywhere in the world.

I happen to be a PSA Travel Advisor and have guided fellow members on trips in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC or the Great Smokies. I personally have contacted photo clubs in an area that I will be traveling and have successful got a member of one of the clubs to guide me around town and all it cost me was a lunch

For foreign travel, decades ago, I used the Blue Guide guidebooks. No info on hotels or restaurants, but DETAILED info on what to see (even down to museum case numbers for certain objects). Had walking routes. Used both country guides and city guides.

These days, Lonely Planet guidebooks work for me.
