Friends of mine and excellent photographers are going to Iceland in February of next year (2013). They seem to be very excited about their trip. "home" temperature is now near 5 degrees so they should "weather" the trip. They are from Manitoba Canada and if you are going as a group they may be part of shoot. Be warm, be safe and polar bears are to be enjoyed through your lens only.

Yes. This is not America with hot and cold running everything, this is a real life experience. Iceland has fabulous scenery, some of the best atmospherics for the aurora, wildlife that is truly interesting. You will love this experience!

No, but I have always wanted to go to Iceland. Look forward to hearing how you liked it and seeing your pictures when you get back.

Have a great time and be safe, it sounds very exciting.

But BMAC it appears from your avatar that you've seen Iceland from miles overhead!

We were in Iceland for 3 days having departed from a cruse to Ireland and Scotland and can truthfully say that Iceland was the best part of our trip. We rented a car and drove a scenic loup to see amazing sights. The gisers were spectacular and worth shooting in video format. Bring a throw away camera for The Blue Lagoon as your photos of each other covered in white mud are priceless. Would I go back...yes

What wildlife? I saw a lot of birds and a few seals. The only native land wildlife in Iceland is the fox, and there are very few of them. I imagine there must also be small critters like lemmings or gophers, but we never saw any. Basically all the mammals you will see are domesticated - sheep, horses, reindeer ( if there are any). Occasionally a polar bear will swim to Iceland from who knows where. They shot the last one.

Birds are not wildlife? Seals, killer whales, there are one or two (thousand) reindeer, and they polar bears swim there from Greenland. Fortunately there are not so many Icelanders so not every bear gets shot by some idiot hunter.
Iceland is different. Sometimes - a lot of times - you have to walk, there not being so many roads. The volcanic activity is quite interesting. It has a lot going for it. Including lots of birds.

Of course birds are wildlife. There are whale watching trips off the north coast. I was wrong about the reindeer - there are free ranging (wild) reindeer in eastern Iceland. They are not native to the island but were brought there in the 18th century, probably by Norwegian Lapps who wanted to raise domesticated reindeer like they do in Norway. But I think you have to go to one of the designated hunting areas to see them. See this link for more:

Oh, BTW it wasn't a hunter who shot the polar bear, it was the police.

When I was there we saw reindeer from the south ring road. Also, whooper swans were retuning from their winter migration (in March).
Icelandic horses, though not wild, make wonderful photo subjects also.
