After spending hours coordinating four cameras and sound for a video in PowerDirector yesterday, I was ready to shut it down for the day. Windows wanted to do an update, but I didn't want to risk losing all my editing, although I did save the file. I clicked on Hibernate, and it shut down.
This morning, the computer was already running when I approached it, and all the open programs were closed. Fortunately, I was able to open the PD file and resume my editing. I was surprised that Windows went ahead and did the update even though I didn't click on either installation option. Something to keep in mind.

I'm not sure it's turned on because it always asks me - update and shut down or update and restart. I always update and shut down.

You don't need to shut it down, just pause it for 7 days.

Usually update and shutdown would install the update then shutdown. When you turn the computer on again it continue to do the update part required when restart. However, now if see if I chose update and shutdown it would do the update and restart, completing the update fully then shutdown.

Interesting. I guess that restarting is something new. As you said, it used to update, shut down and stay shut down.

I shut down without choosing the update & it was installed upon start up for me also. Only it was about 2 weeks ago. Maybe a necessary security update?

Yes, or maybe Microsoft showing that it can whatever it wants.

Jerry, what version of Windows do you have? I have Windows 10 and it didn't offer an update...perhaps Win10 is no longer supported by Microsoft?
