Unless you live in a metropolitan area and are used to driving in highly congested traffic, I would discourage using Phoenix airport. Salt Lake city is okay, but out of the way. Vegas is fun because you can cruise the Strip at night and photograph all the casinos. But, if you like a base that is least stressful, Grand Junction is excellent! Traffic is a piece of cake and good lodging is a mere a mile from the small airport. I have used GJT many times. Go to Moab via Hwy. 128 along the Colorado, south to Bluff and Monument Valley, over to East entrance for Grand Canyon, up through Page to Antelope Canyon then on to Zion, east to Bryce and up through Escalante to Capitol Reef, Goblin Valley and return on I-70 to Grand Junction. Around 1100 miles depending on how many side trips you take.
I live to travel out west and have made a dozen trips into the area you are going.

The route you are suggesting is not very efficient as it involves quite a bit of backtracking - like from the junction of U.S. 160/U.S 89 to the GC East Entrance to Grand Canyon Village and back out again to the U.S. 89/160 junction going up to Page. And then from Page back down U.S. 89 to U.S. 89A to get to Zion.

No thanks. I'll stick with Phoenix and the route that minimizes backtracking - especially at the price of gas nowadays.

A section of Zion NP that is drivable is Kolob Canyons near Cedar City, Utah and it well worth the time and drive. It is frequently over looked.

There is a lot less backtracking from GJT than to SLT or PHX. Grand Canyon is worth two nights in Cameron in order to photograph the canyon both early and late in the day from both directions with lunch in the Village area. Why would you double back to 89A from Page when you can stay on 89 to Zion? 89A would only be of value if going to North Rim. If the OP doesn't care about Antelope Canyon and Horse Shoe Bend and prefers the North Rim, then he can still take 89A.

Sounds like a great trip! If I can suggest it, check out https://www.nationalparksatnight.com/. These guys are always running workshops in national parks (and globally), but focusing specifically on night & light painting photography. I would suggest checking out the blog on that site and searching for the parks you're going to visit for some possible inspiration (not that you need it).

The North Rim closes Oct 15, so if you're going, go now.

Consider Las Vegas to fly into. usually cheaper flights and cars. 2 hours from Zion. North Rim of GC closes around the middle of Oct. but less crowded-some cabins outside the park. Mesa Arch in Canyonlands -be there at sunup-45 minutes from Moab. Bullfrog road going to Capital Reef from Boulder -- Take Hwy 12-very scenic from Bryce to Boulder. Consider Goblin Vally if close.
