My absolute best friend and fishing buddy Dave Vedder and I have fished together Since the early 1980’s, traveling to many spots in Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Alaska and even to the South Pacific as outdoor writers.
This morning I was editing some old images from one of my favorite trips which was to Brownlee Reservoir on the Snake River on the Washington ,Oregon and Idaho borders.
That is how we learned about catching Snake River channel catfish.
We had been enjoying smallmouth Bass and Crappie fishing with Bill, an outdoor writer friend from Idaho when I was filleting crappie for dinner at Farewell Bend. A couple of guys walked up and said, “where did you catch those crappie, we need to catch some for catfish bait.”
“No problem I replied and I cut several chunks of crappie and handed them to them. “ I told them where we had found a school of crappie. “
Where do we go to catch some Catfish this evening ? I asked. They quickly described a spot upriver.
That’s how we learned where to go for Catfish. Here are a few images done with my first point& shoot digital camera.
I hope you enjoy. That’s me in dirty jeans and red t-shirt. The fish on the stringer weighed 64 pounds.
A cautionary note, catfish and other warmwater fishes here should only made into a meal limited a couple of times a month due to certain pollutants in the river water. Check the internet for advisory.
#4 has a look to it and tells a story as well.
A great day on the water! envy, envy, envy!!!
Pretty sure your over the limit.
Actually there is no limit on catfish in Brownlee, but one should never take more they can use in
a reasonable amount of time. We released several channel cats after we retained what's on the stringer.
I grew up on the Snake River and have caught countless numbers of fish. Thos cats are such fun to catch and will fight like crazy. But that being said, the Crappie are much better eating than the cats. Cats out of the river tend to taste a little more muddy as they are definitely bottom feeders. Give me the panfish first, any day!
Crappie fishing is the main draw for many Brownlee visitors. Smallmouth Bass fishing is excellent. We released all the bass and kept most of our crappie for meals.
