I've replaced Samsung batteries in two older phones. That's a great convenience. Imagine having to buy a new car when the battery goes dead.

But new Samsung now you can't. They learned from Apple. Makes more money that way.

This is a first for me. I came across an old iPod, at least ten years old. I charged it, but it wouldn't turn on. When I removed it from its protective case, I saw that the screen was lifted up from one side. Then I found out why: the battery was so swollen that it pushed the right side of the screen away from the body. With the case in place, I couldn't tell if it was like that before I charged it, but it's obviously no good now. I wouldn't even offer it "For Parts" on eBay. I've never had a battery swell before.

In the early 70s I had that problem (swelling battery) when I charged my Rollei flash. I used it a couple more times and it swelled more… and I noticed it was getting very hot when being charged… so… I gave up on it. I think the batteries were NiCad.

Jerry: There is a BIG difference between a phone/Ipad and a car. Do you think, just maybe, that water sealing has anything to do with this issue. Cars also do not use Lithium Ion batteries. Why not think it through before you post? Novel idea for you, I know.

Ahem...perhaps you might wish to do research before posting yourself.
Jerry isn't wrong at all.
Electric car fires are happening...though rare (which is what all cases of battery fire are) is extremely difficult to put out and the fumes...will kill you.
Instead of a small fire...you have a big one...and water isn't going to cut it.

I had that happen to me with a cell phone. Was pushing the protection case outward. Replaced the battery, no problem with phone after replacement.

This happened to one of my genuine NP-FW50 Sony camera batteries.

I have 2 of the classic models. The oldest one wouldn’t keep charge so took it to a tech store. He made a call & found he could get a new battery, so he replaced it. Less than $100 aud. I hear they’re now obsolete.
These are the 160 gb models, hold video etc. 3,500 files of music, hardly makes a dent on the capacity.

I have a Mavic Pro drone. It came with 3 batteries. It was a fantastic drone, took great pics & vids, but after a couple of years, 2 of the batteries, swelled up & couldn’t fit in the flier.
They’re Lithium/ Polymer in soft sac, the tragedy is, I can no longer buy batteries, from sales outlets.
Great machine but useless without batteries. The kit I bought was $1800. Very disappointed in DJI.

You should heed your own advice. (Tesla)

I had this happen to my old iPhone a few years ago. It wouldn't fit my belt clip so I took it to the AT&T store; the rep said no problem and started to pick it up and then he suddenly jumped back. He wouldn't touch it; battery had swollen and he was surprised it hadn't ignited and given me a pair of "hot pants".
Just bought another battery and replaced it; no further issues.

Wow! With the threat of fire and the shortage of lithium, we need new battery technology.

In this case electric cars have lithium ion batteries and when the battery goes bad the cost is very high.
