Bulging Battery

This is a first for me. I came across an old iPod, at least ten years old. I charged it, but it wouldn't turn on. When I removed it from its protective case, I saw that the screen was lifted up from one side. Then I found out why: the battery was so swollen that it pushed the right side of the screen away from the body. With the case in place, I couldn't tell if it was like that before I charged it, but it's obviously no good now. I wouldn't even offer it "For Parts" on eBay. I've never had a battery swell before.

Make sure you're VERY careful with disposal and dispose it according to local law. Lithium batteries have a tendency to spontaneously combust! Best of luck.

I have lithium ion battery swelled before. Nothing new. However if you replace the battery I think it still works.

It's the reason you take the batteries out of any device that won't be used for a long time. For example, a TV in a guest room that is infrequently used should have the batteries removed from its remote control.

I was going to burn it in the woodstove with some paper tonight. Not a good idea?
Seriously, I've seen those batteries burn, and it's nothing I want to see in person. I wouldn't try to remove it from the iPod because it's not just a lift-out, and I think my rough treatment would set it off. Too bad. I have other iPods that are fine.

I just had my 3rd Samsung do the same thing.
Directions to change the battery have eldritch disassembly procedures. ?!?!
Screen is over *there*, phone is over *here*- no problemo.
Just bought a iPhone SE to replace that last one.
3hr battery sucks, and I don't understand the (my first!) ios system.
Pretty tho.

Had the same thing happen with a replacement (aftermarket) battery for an iPhone 3 that I was using as an iPod. Was good for a year or two and one day I see the iPhone opened up because the battery was very swollen. It was just sitting for a day or two.

When the touch pad on my wife's MacBook Pro wouldn't work, I determined that it was due to the bulging battery located directly below. The battery wouldn't let the touch pad depress, even slightly. I replaced the battery and all was well.

Had this happen to a MacBook Pro several years ago; took it to the Genius Bar expecting to pay for a new battery and was told that the problem was with the battery. Got a new battery at no charge and the computer worked until its end-of-life.

Apple was first but others followed. Now Samsung phone and most PC laptop you can't take the battery out unless you know how and it's not an easy operation.

I've replaced Samsung batteries in two older phones. That's a great convenience. Imagine having to buy a new car when the battery goes dead.
