You may want to check with Tamron before you decide to purchase a new mirrorless body. I have a Tamron EF 28-300 lens that works great on my Canon 7D MII but will not work on a Canon M50, R or R7 body. Tamron has confirmed that it will not work on the Canon mirrorless bodies with an EF adapter.

I would contact Tamron to see it the Tamron will auto focus with the "Canon R" camera. Some Tamron lenses don't.
I have switched to "R" but my cameras had a high shots fired (I shoot HDR --3 shot bursts all the time) but loved the old DSLR's.
The "R" cameras are also great but had a learning curve. Not much but had to be set up etc.

I bought a new Tamron 400 mm mirror lens from B&H. It would work on my Canon 6DII but would not work on my Canon mirrorless camera with the Canon adapter. I was not pleased with the image quality so ended up giving it away.

OH BOY!! Well that made that decision easy. I love my 18-400 and have had it only 2 years. It's rarely off the camera. Thank you for letting me know this.

Thank you for letting me know this. As stated to another person, the 18-400 is my very favorite lens, so that made my decision very easy. Guess I'll spend my money on a 500 or 600 lens for my 80D. Should be able to find some decent used ones.

I have the Canon R7 with the adapted Tammron 150-600. This (for me) a great combination for birds. It's an amazing camera and well worth the wait. It is pretty heavy. If weight is a factor this may not be for you. If not???

The Tamron 150-600 upgrade works but the early version must be sent back to be upgraded. Tamron's lenses have some that will up grade, some the they can up grade and some the can't be upgraded.

Interesting this is the first that I have heard that the 18-400 will not work on an R7. I just called Tamron and they said it WILL work with the R7. They said of course an adapter ring is needed and depending on age a software update may be needed.

Thanks for that reminder on the quote reply. I have a lot to consider, I plan to take my time and do a lot of research. Perhaps rent one first before taking the plunge.

The R10 may be all you need - I have an 80D also and having the same thoughts as you. If doing birds, you will need the reach of crop frame. You will be amazed at how much better image quality is possible @400mm with a better lens !

I’m looking to get a mirrorless camera and wondering what anyones thoughts are on the mirrorless. I have a Canon EOS D80 and it’s time to upgrade. I have the Canon kit lenses, and a 50mm. I also have a Tamron 18-400 which I love. I’m assuming I can get an adapter for that lens. Any thoughts? Thanks

I upgraded from a canon MIV to R5 and have no regrets and never looked back. I say,,,,,,,,go for it. It's always good to investigate, solicit opinions and try/test the camera before locking in on purchasing or not. BTW,,,,,,it doesn't sound like you've succumb to GAS.

AntonioReyna - The 400mm “Mirror” lens is a manual lens. There is a option on the Canon Mirrorless bodies to operate the shutter even if their is no lens attached. If you set that option to on, the lens would have worked.

I agree with the comment about the R7 for birds and nature photography. I love mine coupled with a Signa 150-600mm lens. It is amazing how much you can crop and still have a sharp image!

That’s what my husband says. My thinking is the mirrorless would be lighter? I have to go to a camera store and hold one. However I am looking for faster FPS. I photograph hummingbirds. Also, present camera has a crop sensor. I would like a full frame. But you are right, maybe get a better lens. Things to think about. Thanks for your input

If you go to a full frame, your 18-400 and kit lens from the 80D won't work the way you want. They are crop frame lenses (EF-S) and won't fill a full frame sensor, there would be vignetting if the camera didn't go into crop mode. If it does go into crop mode, it will crop out the contribution of more than 1/2 the pixels in its sensor. With either a full or crop frame camera, you would need an adapter to use EF (Canon DSLR) or EF-S lenses on an R (Canon mirrorless) body.

The recently announced R7 (and basic R10) are Canon's crop frame R series (mirrorless) cameras. I have both the R7 and an 80D. There isn't that much of a difference in size. When I add the adapter, the R7 with my EF-S zoom lens and adapter weigh about the same as the 80D and lens. There are only 2 R-S (R crop) lenses available, so one would likely use the DSLR lenses with the adapter for other focal ranges.

I have the r7, and use the Tamron 18-400 with the canon adapter on it. It works very well, although the weight is a little on the heavy side. IQ is very good. The question is "Why do you feel you have to upgrade?"
