This Mantis was eating a spider when I first saw it. I moved it to a different spot, so I could get a better view to take the photo. They don't move fast, but when an ant came along it took only a second to catch it.

Wonderful shot with ant. Out of focus legs add a frenzied look.
I enjoyed the day when a brood hatched on my front porch. Too small for me to photo, but I know what a good omen they are as a natural predator. I never use insecticides.

Absolutely superb photo of the predator with prey. Excellent detail!

Agreed! extraordinary! Do you think they came to earth from a distant planet?

Great shots. It's no wonder you didn't get a shot of the actual capture, they are really fast. It's been a good year for us, we have seen several around our yard, and one egg sack next to our porch. I've stopped mowing that patch and hope to see more mantises next year.

Egg sac? What does an egg sac look like?

They are fascinating insects but one disturbing fact to consider is that there have been documented instances of a large mantis taking an unsuspecting hummingbird. Best to relocate one if found around any hummingbird feeders!

Excellent photo. This is a Chinese Praying Mantis. They've about driven our native Praying Mantis, which is less than half it's size, extinct. When I see one, I kill it..

Just curious. Is it praying mantis as in saying a prayer, or is it preying mantis as in an animal seeking its prey??????

Thank you for the info. Yes I have read of the Mantis preying on hummingbirds.
A very unfortunate event to say the least.

Interesting. I saw a small one the other day I suspect it could have been this species.

Well at least they won’t be eating hummingbirds!

That’s a good analogy!
