Eye-fi Cards

My new Sony NEX-6 camera manual says I can now send my images wirelessly to my TV via an "Eye-Fi Card". Has anyone tried this and, if so, what equipment do I need (like router, wi-fi) etc. to do this though an iMac?

You need to purchase the Eye-Fi card and use your computer or iPad or iPhone and set it up with thet Eye-Fi application which is free for direct send to your device. On http://support.eye.fi/ look at the Support tab and Hot Topics: Direct Mode "Set up Direct Mode for iOS" for iPad.

Bruce,

Thank you; that's very useful information. So, pardon my ignorance, but I suppose I would have to get a computer router, download the app., get an Eye-fi card that displays RAW files and somehow get Wi-Fi. Is that correct? Is it worth it?

Thanks again,

Bill

An Eye-Fi card's only function is to transmit files to one place from another. It has a transmitter that is in a SD memory card in the camera and it sends photos "over the air" to any wi-fi antennas looking for a wi-fi source. The Eye-Fi transmitter IS the source. So a direct connection is made between the Eye-Fi transmitter in the camera and the device (such as a laptop) with antennas in it (virtually all laptops have wi-fi built in). No router or anything is required for this direct connection.

In your case, they're saying to put the Eye-Fi transmitter SD card thing in your laptop's card slot and the TV has wi-fi antennas in it that will connect to the Eye-Fi directly. I don't know about that. It seems you should need some sort of RAM memory to store the photos that come to the TV, unless there's some in the TV itself. I personally wouldn't want to sit there with my camera running while transmitting photos to the TV. Kinda weird.

Personally, when I do that, I put my photos on a "thumb drive" or "travel drive" as they're called and plug that into the USB port on the back of the TV - a LOT cheaper ($3 to $15 for travel drives) and much easier than buying and fighting with an Eye-Fi card to get it set up.

Bruce,

That's a great idea and I have thumb drives but not a laptop (just have an iMac) so I'm not certain how I would be able to scroll through the photos on the drive otherwise.
I suppose another option would be to get an HTML cable for the camera, but then I could only screen photo files that are on the camera card rather than being able to put slide shows together from older images not on an existing camera card.
Any idea?
Thanks again,
Bill

You don't need a laptop for a thumb drive! You just load it up with JPGs from whatever computer you have and stick the thumb drive in the TV.

My TV will read from a SD card. I just use the remote to access the card and then scroll through the pix to view or display as a slide show.

You asked about an Eye-Fi card not the thumb drive, however does your iMac have wifi? If it does then it will work. If you want to check it out before you buy call the Eye-Fi support.
