Great shot Fred! Had a dog years ago that got the worst of an encounter with one.
Nice shot. I ate one once while undergoing survival training in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Tasted kind of like boot leather marinated in turpentine

Someone did something wrong! Porcupines eat tender green growth, mostly. Here in Michigan their meat is dark and a bit sweet, rather like Duck, and sometimes a bit greasy like Bear. I have enjoyed them on more than one occasion. Maybe some CA type tried to juice them up with Chili pepper, LOL. Living on tender green growth, I don't know how they could become tough and foul. A highly curious event, I think.
